Obituary of Allan S. Ashley

~~     Al was a devoted and loving husband to Jean throughout their 50 plus years of marriage.   He was thrilled that after 10 years they became parents.  His love for Heather and Allison was evidenced by his words of encouragement and by his wise counsel.  He always guided with love and understanding and gave unwavering support to their chosen paths in life. In January he became Pop-Pop, to Amelia Janice, a sweet baby with a great smile, just like her grandfather.
In his career at Adelphi University, over a period of almost 50 years, he excelled as a Professor and Chair of the Management, Marketing and Decision  Sciences Department in the School of Business.  His colleagues agree that on any day he could be  recognized by his “jaunty football stride” making his way down the 3rd floor hall, going about his business as a “roving ambassador,” – sensitively welcoming new colleagues and greeting seasoned colleagues  with a hello, a wide smile, and a positive thought.  It was obvious that he loved his career, and his devotion to excellence and harmony were of great importance to him.  He was a great teacher and mentor who respected his students and worked tirelessly to provide them with quality education, while giving them every opportunity to succeed.  Boxes of student projects filled the home at the end of every semester which took days to evaluate.  Despite the labor involved, he never took the quick and easy path.
He loved gardening and making things beautiful.  Even though he came by this wonderful activity later in life, he quickly realized that he had the skills and subsequently found it to be quite enjoyable and rewarding.
Throughout life, even through his suffering, he followed the Way of Christ. Al leaves his family--wife Jean, daughter Allison engaged to Roy, daughter Heather married to Matthew, granddaughter Amelia, brother Bill, sister-in-law Carol, his nephew Michael, and niece Janice (deceased), all of whom were special to him.
