Obituary
Patricia Tietjen was born on June 30, 1958 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. She passed away on January 1, 2021 in Bonita Springs, Florida. She is predeceased by her father Francis, mother Ann and brother James. She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Gagliardo, Esq., stepson Anthony, brother William Tietjen, Esq., sister-in-law Kathleen and adored nephews, Billy and John.
From the time she was a little girl, Patricia wanted to be a doctor. She graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. She completed her postdoctoral training at both St Vincent's and Memorial Sloan Kettering. After her training, she continued to be affiliated with both hospitals and eventually became President of Saint Vincent's Medical Staff. In 2008, she became the Chair of the Department of Medicine for Danbury Hospital. In 2020 she became the Chief Medical Officer for Nuvance Health. Only 3% of Chief Medical Officers are women.
Patricia loved to travel the world; but she felt most at home treating patients and working with doctors and staff especially nurses. One of the reasons she was chosen to be Chief Medical Officer was to enhance the patient experience and to improve physician and staff engagement. Almost as much as practicing medicine, Patricia loved to teach. She received the Richard J. Kennedy Attending Teacher of the Year Award four times. In her role as Chief Medical Officer, she had oversight of all aspects of Medical Education and was responsible for the development of a Network-wide teaching academy. Patricia combined her love of travel and medicine by yearly accompanying pilgrims to Lourdes attending to their medical needs.
Patricia's Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday January 9, 2021. In lieu of flowers, Patricia requested that a donation be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.
