Obituary
Patricia Tietjen was born on June 30, 1958 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. She passed away on January 1, 2021 in Bonita Springs, Florida. She is predeceased by her father Francis, mother Ann and brother James. She is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph Gagliardo, Esq., stepson Anthony, brother William Tietjen, Esq., sister-in-law Kathleen and adored nephews, Billy and John.
From the time she was a little girl, Patricia wanted to be a doctor. She graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. She completed her postdoctoral training at both St Vincent's and Memorial Sloan Kettering. After her training, she continued to be affiliated with both hospitals and eventually became President of Saint Vincent's Medical Staff. In 2008, she became the Chair of the Department of Medicine for Danbury Hospital. In 2020 she became the Chief Medical Officer for Nuvance Health. Only 3% of Chief Medical Officers are women.
Patricia loved to travel the world; but she felt most at home treating patients and working with doctors and staff especially nurses. One of the reasons she was chosen to be Chief Medical Officer was to enhance the patient experience and to improve physician and staff engagement. Almost as much as practicing medicine, Patricia loved to teach. She received the Richard J. Kennedy Attending Teacher of the Year Award four times. In her role as Chief Medical Officer, she had oversight of all aspects of Medical Education and was responsible for the development of a Network-wide teaching academy. Patricia combined her love of travel and medicine by yearly accompanying pilgrims to Lourdes attending to their medical needs.
Patricia's Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Patrick's Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday January 9, 2021. In lieu of flowers, Patricia requested that a donation be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

I am terribly heartbroken to discern the passing of Dr. Pat Tiegen’s as she was indubitably, the unequivocal apotheosis of magnanimity, competence, affability and compassion. Notwithstanding, I rest assured knowing that Elysium welcomes the return of one of its most beloved, sacrosanct angels... Thank you, Dr. Tiegen for your propitious care... Love, Alan, 2024

I met Dr. Tietjen 30 years ago at my first job out of college when I worked in her clinic at Sloan Kettering. I drove past the hospital last night and thought of her. I came home and googled to see where she was and am so deeply saddened to hear this. She was such a special person - she impacted me in such a brief time so many years ago. Her unit secretary would always say “ Dr. T is down” - she most certainly was the most down to earth, kind and compassionate Dr. I have worked with. Also incredibly fun. She was such a blessing to everyone who got to cross her path. - Karen Holl- Palumbo

We were very sorry to hear of Patty’s death. She was a kind and loving person who loved to laugh like her mother. From the time she was a young girl, she was always present when you were in conversation with her. As she spoke with you she showed her concern by always maintaining eye contact. I have a picture of it in my mind as I write. You have always been a good friend to my sister who has not had an easy journey in life. While you are involved in a loving reunion in heaven, you leave a legacy of love and healing which will warm the hearts of those who will miss you. God bless you, Patty. My heart is so saddened to hear about Pat’s passing. I last texted with her the day she arrived in Florida for recuperating. I worked as Pat’s assistant in Danbury hospital from the day she arrived until my retirement in May 2015. She was a phenomenal doctor, administrator but most of all a special, giving person. As a New Yorker myself we thought we had a special bond and enjoyed our stories of growing up and living in New York. The world has truly lost one of its shining stars. My sincere condolences to all her family. She loved her family deeply and always talked about them. May she now be at peace.

Pat Tietjen was an incredible physician and teacher. So dedicated and hard working. She was a role model for all the pulmonary fellows at St. Vincent’s hospital. I still hear her voice rattling off the 15 causes of pulmonary nodules when I am looking at a Cat scan. I feel honored and grateful for having had you as a teacher, Pat. You have made such a difference in so many of our lives. May you Rest In Peace.

Our beautiful and illustrious Pat... may she rest in peace in the loving arms of the Lord Jesus Christ, having been an incredible steward of the life she was given. Gone too soon.. she will be missed terribly by all whose lives she touched while on this earth. She lived a life dedicated to the service of others and exuded compassion. As a friend of Pat's from our days together in high school, at St. Michael's Academy in NYC, I will always remember her as thoughtful, smart, funny, and charismatic. Pat was a genuinely beautiful person who used her life to help and bring joy to others by bestowing boundless generosity silently. Her laughter was contagious, her kindness provided strength, and her graceful humility was a model to emulate. She radiated sunshine no matter how cloudy the day was. A brilliant and dedicated physician, devoted daughter, sister, wife, and friend. I am blessed to have known her and I will miss her so much. I am grateful she has left a lasting impression on my heart.

From the day Pat arrived at St. Vincent’s, she brought light and joy to all she interacted with, regardless of your position. I worked with her for many years and with the fellows she educated. Regardless of how swamped she was, she always made the time for a quick “hello, how are you?” Besides her intellect, she radiated kindness and compassion and worked endless hours to complete all she needed to do. I respected her and loved her as a woman, a doctor and a friend. We have lost a shining light in all of our lives but grateful she is out of pain and at peace. We will meet again but Pat will remain embedded in my heart every day.

The average person if they are lucky lives approximately 275,759 days. It is not the number of days that are important but how we live them. Pat lived everyday "giving, laughing, comforting and loving". Her "unconditional" commitment to her ", family, friends, faith, and those she cared for" is truly to be admired. Pat and I lived a few short blocks from one another when we were children. Our friendship bonded as we were both from large Irish families and devout Catholic's. When the tragedy of 9/11 occurred all of our lives changed forever. My brother needed to see a pulmonologist, as he was on the frontline. I called Pat's office and one of her Assistant's said her schedule was full for several months. I told her that I was a friend of Pat's. One hour later Pat called me and said "tell your brother to come in at 4:00". This was whom Pat was dedicated and always putting someone in front of her. While our precious friend is no longer here in the physical sense, her memory and legacy will live on in all that loved her and were fortunate enough to be a part of her life. In quoting Helen Keller "What we have once enjoyed we never lose. All that we love deeply becomes part of us. Death is no more than passing from one room into another". Billy, please know that whenever the Class of 76 gather's Pat will be toasted and will never be forgotten. One can never forget such an extraordinary person. May you RIP my sweet friend and we all will see you again. My love and friendship to you always. The world is a darker place.

I extend my deepest condolences to Joe, Bill, Beana and their families.
Patricia was that rare individual who grabbed life into a bear hug and lived every day with enthusiasm and laughter. She was brilliant, beautiful, the life of every party, kind, down to earth, and modest about her many gifts. From Chelsea all across the world, Patricia touched everyone she encountered with her intellect and compassion during her storied and groundbreaking medical career. She saw the best in the people she loved.
I was blessed to be her friend since first grade at Guardian Angel School through St. Michael’s Academy. ln college days and beyond we crisscrossed each other and the city having fun at concerts and enjoying the city we both love. She fought valiantly and with immense faith and positivity against the cancer that took her.
C.S. Lewis said, “her absence is like the sky, spread over everything.”
I can’t believe she’s gone. Rest in peace, Patricia.

Dear Joe, Bill, Beana and all who loved Pat,
It is hard to put into words the sense of loss you feel when you lose someone who unflinchingly gave so much to so many others. As sick as Pat had been, I, uncharacteristically for me, believed she would triumph over her illness. I believed and prayed that, as throughout the myriad successes in her life, her storied past would become prologue. Even in her loss her memory is a blessing. A brilliant, ego-free, hard-working Chelsea girl, who took the D train to The Bronx in September of 1976 and deftly played Wendy to a diverse group of Lost Boys who worshipped her. I still do. Pat: I will never forget our night at Trader Vics, homemade onion sauce at Breezy, singing at your wedding reception or you. Always in my heart, Ed

Dear Joe, Bill, Mary Jane, Tom and Jimmy,
Please accept our sincerest condolences on Patricia's passing. It was shocking to us when we heard that the cancer had spread so much. We had built our hopes up, but this disease is so insidious. Patricia was a truly warn, sincere and helpful person. She looked after Jean in a many ways, going all the way back to St. Vincent's Hospital and more recently, her treatments at MSK. We welcomed the annual note regarding her trips to Lourdes where she prayed for and physically helped so many. Patricia did a great deal in her (too) short life.

One of our last conversations at Hospice was she felt she had so much to do yet. I said let’s talk about what you’ve done; The Residents and Fellows she taught are now working on the frontlines of a Pandemic saving lives. The devotion to her Family, especially her Nephews, who were educated well and have great jobs. I told her these are her legacies.
