Obituary

Ethel Cameron, Affectionately known as Ena, passed away at Our Lady of Consolations on April 30th, 2020 at the age of 89. Ethel was born in Jamaica, West Indies on November 11, 1930 to John and Barbrey Cameron. She was one of 10 children. After High School, her quest for a better life led her first to Kingston then the shores of England, where she lived for a short time. Better opportunity led her away from Jamaica for a second time; Ethel moved to Texas where she worked for and was accepted as a part of the Nunes family. In 2005, she retired and moved to New York to be closer to her daughters.

Ethel is survived by her four children, Maurice Wallace, Paul Tavares Sr., Nadia Tavares, and Renee Tavares. She is lovingly remembered by Richard and her 13 grandchildren; Paul Jr., Shanika, Lisa, Jemika, Paulann, Brandon, Natalia W., John, Natalia, Jonathan, Payton, Paige, and Paxton, her dog; Charlie, her great grandchildren Nia, Paul III, and Pierson, her sisters; Icilda Gray and Beulah Butterfield, her nieces and nephews, a special member of her extended family; Ruth Bailey and all her friends. She will also be missed by the Nunes family; Tony, Neave, Michael, Sean, Brian and all of her friends in Texas who supported her throughout the years. Ethel was a devout Catholic who attended church every Sunday. She read the Bible and said the rosary daily; her TV was always on the Catholic Channel until game time. Every spring and summer, she would spend hours tending to her rose bushes; she would be accompanied by a cardinal in the nearby tree and she would say, “I want to be that bird and fly.” Ethel was a huge sports fan, she loved football. Her favorite football team was the Houston Oilers. Ethel was also the biggest cheerleader in the living room for the Houston Astros to the chagrin of everyone. Ethel loved to bake her famous Banana Bread, enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, rooting for contestants on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with her family and her dog, Charlie. Ethel was truly loved by her family and friends, she left behind many beautiful memories. “Fly on Home Ena.” Our thoughts and prayers goes out to those who are affected by COVID-19.
