Obituary
Ethel Cameron, Affectionately known as Ena, passed away at Our Lady of Consolations on April 30th, 2020 at the age of 89.
Ethel was born in Jamaica, West Indies on November 11, 1930 to John and Barbrey Cameron. She was one of 10 children. After High School, her quest for a better life led her first to Kingston then the shores of England, where she lived for a short time. Better opportunity led her away from Jamaica for a second time; Ethel moved to Texas where she worked for and was accepted as a part of the Nunes family. In 2005, she retired and moved to New York to be closer to her daughters.
.
Ethel is survived by her four children, Maurice Wallace, Paul Tavares Sr., Nadia Tavares, and Renee Tavares. She is lovingly remembered by Richard and her 13 grandchildren; Paul Jr., Shanika, Lisa, Jemika, Paulann, Brandon, Natalia W., John, Natalia, Jonathan, Payton, Paige, and Paxton, her dog; Charlie, her great grandchildren Nia, Paul III, and Pierson, her sisters; Icilda Gray and Beulah Butterfield, her nieces and nephews, a special member of her extended family; Ruth Bailey and all her friends. She will also be missed by the Nunes family; Tony, Neave, Michael, Sean, Brian and all of her friends in Texas who supported her throughout the years.
Ethel was a devout Catholic who attended church every Sunday. She read the Bible and said the rosary daily; her TV was always on the Catholic Channel until game time. Every spring and summer, she would spend hours tending to her rose bushes; she would be accompanied by a cardinal in the nearby tree and she would say, “I want to be that bird and fly.” Ethel was a huge sports fan, she loved football. Her favorite football team was the Houston Oilers. Ethel was also the biggest cheerleader in the living room for the Houston Astros to the chagrin of everyone. Ethel loved to bake her famous Banana Bread, enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, rooting for contestants on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with her family and her dog, Charlie. Ethel was truly loved by her family and friends, she left behind many beautiful memories. “Fly on Home Ena.”
Our thoughts and prayers goes out to those who are affected by COVID-19.

Gosh, there are years of memories to share with you. Your Mom worked for us mostly on Saturdays so there was a stop before we picked her up at the Shipley DoNut shop for a cream filled one for her....she never ate while working but would take it back along with a bag of peanuts and a Coke. Despite me asking her not to pick up,after the kids....you can imagine what she did! She was such a delight to have around and I know I speak for our friends who also loved and depended o.
on Her to keep their homes clean and neat. Then, one wonderful memory was being with her as she took the Oath to the United States...lucky for us to have her as a citizen. Of course, the. Nunes made that day possible and Vince, across the street from us, helped her with tax returns and setting up her IRA. She was so proud! The party we gave that evening in our home for all her Houston "family" to,help with the celebration. I know how blessed the Speildenner family was to have your Mom help with their elderly parents thru the years enabling them to live in their home until they passes. The funny story of how she shooed the locksmith away who was called to make a car key for the elderly gentleman....his children had taken the car keys away from him for safety reasons. She was a wonderful lady who worked to help her children from afar...she loved you dearly and I know you made her later years THE BEST. May your happy memories sustain you in the difficult days ahead, blessings!fPE7T

We were filled with deep sadness when we heard of Ena’s passing although I am sure she was ready to go, she had such great faith and knew she was going straight to heaven. She was a very big part of our family, taught me how to bathe a baby when our first son Michael was born, 49 years ago, taught me how to cook, and many other things, she was not only like a mother to our children but also to me. She was an integral part of our family, the Plant family, the Girotto family and all the other families she worked for while living in Houston. She had a heart of gold and I know she will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Our sympathies go out to you all.
The Nunes family

Nadia, losing such a loved and cherished member of a family can be devastating, but the love and memories you share will last a lifetime. Knowing that Ena is with our Lord, wrapped in his love and peace can give you some comfort.
She will be so missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Anytime I went over to your home she was always this quiet constant presence., there to make anyone more comfortable and fed. She was loving and attentive to my children. She welcomed John as one of her own and I will always think of her as the one of the kindest women I have met.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Known to many as Ethel Cameron. She was known to us lovingly as just Aunt Ena and to my mom fondly as Cameron, Cam or Ena. Aunt Ena was a sister to our mother in more ways than can be imagine. They weren't sisters by blood but by choice. They were there at the birth of each other's children. There were nothing in this earth my mom could not share with Aunt Ena. She was her vault and vice versa. I personally felt loved and cherished when I was around aunty. She had a way to make everyone feel safe around her because her ability to love was unmeasurable. Her love for her children was abounding. She worked hard and took each opportunity to make sure she could provide for them at the sacrifice at times of being away from them. Her children will always be a part of our family and hearts. We love you Ena/Aunty. Rest in peace.
