Obituary of Gertrude "Trudy" Thunberg

THUNBERG- Gertrude Cecilia "Trudy" (née Winter), on January 20, 2019. She immigrated from Germany on the S.S. Deutschland at six years old in 1928, traveling with her mother and brother to be greeted in New York by her father, and became the embodiment of “The Greatest Generation.” She met her husband Paul in 1945; a few months of courtship turned into 63 years of blissful marriage. They raised their family in Brightwaters on Long Island and spent 30 years in Southern California after Paul retired.  Trudy returned to Long Island after Paul passed in 2008. Her love, warmth and dedication to her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family knew no bounds.  Friends and family visiting her and Paul’s beloved summer home “Brightwaters” on Lake George were heartily embraced with her hospitality, scrumptious food, sparkling wit and the exquisite scenery, and all fondly remember the boating excursions aboard the “Good Shepherd.”  Beloved wife of the late Paul G. Thunberg. Devoted mother of Christine Dennis, Kenneth Thunberg and Carl Thunberg. Cherished grandmother of William Dennis, Patrick Dennis, Kevin Dennis, Brian Dennis, Katherine Kramer, James Thunberg, Heidi Thunberg, Melissa Thunberg, Michael Thunberg and Kai Thunberg.  Loving great-grandmother of Luke, Spencer and Theodore Dennis, Morgan, William, and Harrison Kramer, Riley and Bronwyn Thunberg, Ellis and Casper Besana, and Grayson, Tobin and Livia Quist. Dear sister of Emilie and Paul McSloy and Donald "Tom" and Phyllis Winter and the late Jacob and Lottie Winter. Adored aunt to many nieces and nephews. Reposing at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY 11795.  A funeral service to be held Saturday 10:00AM at the funeral home with a private cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in loving memory of Trudy to Hospice Care Network, 99 Sunnyside Boulevard, Woodbury, NY 11797.  Visitation Friday 3:00PM until 5:00PM and 7:00PM until 9:00PM.
