I don't know why Mr. Kottmann popped into my head today, but he did so I Googled him and saw that he has passed. I hold fond memories of his history class in HHH East. I believe I had him for European History in 1999-2000, and I distinctly remember memorizing the timelines of the unifications of Germany and Italy for his tests. He was a kind and engaging teacher who could also make excellent sly jokes, and I always looked forward to his class. I also remember that he had lost his sense of smell, and none of us could believe that (the things that stick in your memories!) I went on to study history in college in large part because of Mr. Kottmann and the excellent HHH history teachers I had. Sending my good wishes to his family and friends.

I was taught 11th grade American History by Mr Kottman in 84-85. He was a delightful teacher. In fact, perhaps the great social studies teachers in HHH were at least partly responsible for me studying to become one myself. I have been teaching for over 30 years in Atlanta and then the SF East Bay. I hope I have spread some of Mr Kottman’s joy in learning to the thousands of students whom I have taught. This is the immortal earthly life of a good teacher.

Fred Kottman was my Social Studies teacher in grades 10 and 11. He inspired me to take an active role in national and international events. He also was a main reason why I became a Chemistry teacher and currently teach at Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows, NY. Mr. Kottman, thank-you for being my teacher, mentor, and friend. You are an excellent teacher and a fine man. My condolences and prayers to the family. God bless you.

Fred Kottman, a.k.a. Freddie The K, was one of the best teachers I ever had. I was a student in both his American History and European History classes at Half Hollow Hills HIgh School East from 1983-85. He was a brilliant educator, and more importantly, a wonderful human being. I looked forward to every single class, and never missed one if I could help it. He figured out the secret of how to make learning fun, and treated all of his students with respect, understanding and compassion. This hurts my heart. Rest In Peace.

He was our cousin Freddy
And his name was at the top
Of that long list of McSweeney's
That started with the man called "Pop"
I know he's in a good place
with those that he had loved
And we will get to see him
In God's paradise up above
So until we're all together
In that wonderful place where you are
And I have a funny feeling
It's really not that far
Give our loved ones great big kisses
And tell them they're in our thoughts
And one sweet day it will start all over
Just like we all were taught

Fred was one of those wonderful human beings who will be very much missed by his beloved sister, Carol Ann, her husband, James, and all of his relatives and friends.
When I met Fred in May, 1968, he was a dashing Naval Lieutenant assigned to the USS Kearsarge. We met at a social event at the Officer’s Club, Terminal Island. He told me he was amazed to have met a person who was actually born and raised in Ireland, living in Southern California. He thought that all the Irish went to New York to live and work. Fred really liked The Clancy Brothers and gave me his prized collection of their records, which I still have!
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Carol Ann and James and to all of Fred’s relatives on their tremendous loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very sad time. May Fred R.I.P.
