Obituary of Stephen Mark Jude Schaedtler

Stephen Mark Jude Schaedtler entered into eternal life on June 29, 2018. He was born March 14, 1955 and raised in East Islip N.Y , by his loving parents, Dorothy (Henshaw) & Arthur Schaedtler of East Islip & Boca Raton, Fl.  He is survived by his parents, his cherished son Andrew H. Schaedtler of Chicago IL. and his caring & devoted sister Carol Ann Jude Schaedtler Selkis and her husband Tom (Steve’s other “brother”) of Loudonville N.Y. He was predeceased by his beloved brother Richard (Rick) Schaedtler of Blue Point, N.Y. (“his Irish twin”).. He also leaves behind a loving niece, Hail Rose (Schaedtler)Walsh and two nephews Ryan T.J.S Selkis and Jarod Schaedtler along with his newest great nephew Rhett Selkis. He will be fondly remembered by many other wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts & uncles and friends.

Steve was a graduate of St. Marys school in East Islip, St. John the Baptist in West Islip, University of Dayton and Cal Western School of Law where he earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence. Steve grew up working in the family business (Custom Swimming Pool Service) where he and his brother Rick and their friends learned their trade as master pool men. This group of pool men have remained friends throughout the years and have loved and supported Steve like the brother he was. He was creative and industrious and had an innate ability to fix, rig and/or repair just about anything which earned him the nick name ‘MacGyver’. He was an avid fisherman & golfer but his true passions were music, surfing and the law, all of which he excelled.

Steve’s legal career spanned four decades and included work for the law firms of Siben & Siben and Koeffler and Harrison before entering into private practice where his colorful wit and brilliant legal mind often left those in the courtroom both enthralled and laughing. He engaged everyone he met with a smile and a kind word whether it be a judge or the next person in line at his daily trip to the coffee shop.  He interacted with everyone he met with effortless and sincere charm like he was talking with an old friend.

 All those fortunate enough to pass through Steve’s orbit knew the true meaning of the word ‘friend’ because of his kind and compassionate soul. His infectious laugh and wicked sense of humor were his gifts to those who knew and loved him. He was a true, gentle man .  He touched everyone he met whether it was for ten minutes or ten years as evidence in a note from his surgeon;

“I am saddened by his passing. He was a real character and always cheered us up with his humor. I know he is in a better place now and my prayers are with you and your family.”

~ Dr. Alexander Dagum

Thank you to all of Stephen’s many family members, friends and colleagues for their unending prayers and well wishes these past many months. The family offers a special heart felt thank you to Jim, Colin, Chris, Barbara, Janet and Dan for always being there for Steve and his family with their time, love and support.

The family would also like to thank the incredible staff at Stony Brook Medical Center and especially Doctors Dagum & Schneider and their entire teams for the outstanding care and comfort they provided Steve over the past couple of years.

Rest in peace, dear brother!
