Obituary of Milton R. Beyers, M.D.

Milton R. Beyers, M.D. (Mitty) passed away on August 20th, 2017 at home in Indianapolis, IN surrounded by his loving family. Mitty was born to Dr. Saul and Mary Beyers on November 20, 1920, and spent all but the last 3 years of his life in and around the environs of Babylon, NY. He graduated from Babylon High School in 1937, Hofstra College (cum laude) in 1941, and New York University College of Medicine in 1945. He served an internship at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y. where on his first day he met a student nurse, Dorothy Muriel McTague (Mac), and told her they would marry. His prediction came true and on May 17th, 1946 they wed. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army and then went on to complete his internal medicine training. Mitty published numerous articles in various medical journals throughout his long career in medicine. Of these, the one in which he was most proud was establishing a rationale for an effective therapy in a previously untreatable disease – hemochromatosis. He practiced Internal Medicine in Babylon, NY from 1953-1987. In 1989, Dr. Beyers helped establish and served as medical director of Good Samaritan (now known as Good Shepherd) Hospice, retiring in 2007 at the age of 87. During his medical career, he served as Consultant in Internal Medicine at the Northport V.A. Hospital; Attending of Internal Medicine at Huntington Hospital; Senior Attending of Internal Medicine at Southside Hospital; and Senior Attending, Chief of Hematology, Director of Blood Dyscrasia Clinic, Electrocardiograph interpreter and President of the Medical Board at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mitty was preceded in death by his loving wife Mac and son William Beyers. He is survived by his two daughters Beth Frankel (Richard) and Sally Atkins (Lisa); his brother Gerald S. Beyers, D.M.D.; two grandsons, Nikolas Atkins (Zoe) and Matthew Beyers; two granddaughters, Alison D’Amico (Thomas) and Rebecca Baker (Zach); seven great-grandchildren, Gabrielle and Julia D’Amico, Hannah, Henry and Nella Graffis, Aliyah Beyers, and Indie Atkins; and one great-great-granddaughter, Isabella Tilman. A memorial visitation will be held at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway. (1/4 mile west of the Robert Moses Causeway.)  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mitty’s memory to Good Shepherd Hospice, 110Bi County Blvd#114, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
