Obituary

Norma Jean Meder of West Islip, NY passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024. Beloved wife of the late Daniel F. Meder Sr. Devoted father of Daniel (Patricia), Paul (Trina), John (Bonnie), Thomas (Frances) and Robert (Sarah). Cherished grandmother of eleven and great-grandmother of four. In addition to her husband Daniel, Norma was predeceased by her brothers Robert and James, and her daughter-in-law Marjorie. She was a retired Teacher with Babylon High School. Norma grew up in Dunkirk, NY. She graduated from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY before earning her masters degree from Marquette University. She moved to Long Island in 1953 to teach in the Bethpage school system. After teaching there for several years, she stepped away from teaching to raise a family. She returned to teaching in the early 1980’s at Babylon High School from which she eventually retired. Norma’s two passions were education and history. Even when she was busy raising her five sons, she remained connected to the school system through her work with the West Islip PTA, serving as president for a time. With her love of history, she became an indispensable member of the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society, serving on the Board of Trustees. She ran the docent program for many years, chaired the by-laws committee, and initiated the very successful “Christmas at Sagtikos” event which she chaired for 15 years. She also served on the Board of Directors for the West Islip Symphony. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Norma’s memory to the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society (Sagtikosmanor.org)
