Thank you Syd. You were always very beautiful when you didn’t mean to be. I’m happy I could get candids like this, it’ll help me remember just how lucky we all were just to be close to you, how blessed we’d been by the fact that you were near. We’ll miss that blessing; I’ll miss you. ‘Till we meet again girl!

As I walk through the campus of URI, each new building and each new location brings with it memories of my times spent with Sydney. Dancing to music in Fayerweather, it's Always Sunny in Eddy, exploring campus in the middle of the night with service dawgs (liam, ashley, sydney and I), walking through the gardens talking about plants, going to fort matt in the woods, partying at garrahy, sleeping over Sinna's house, going to concerts in providence on countless weekends, guild shows in the union, hanging out in brookside after class, going to izone for late night pizza, listening to her explain chemistry way above my head, hearing her contagious laughter, seeing her light up whenever she saw friends or got to go on a walk somewhere, seeing her classic outfits with her battle jacket and vampire shoes, listening to her brag ahout her 'wife' Sara... nearly every memory of my time in college is connected to Sydney in some way. And I will always cherish and love her and those times and those memories and all the happiness and kindness and, as she would say, swag that she brought to the world and to my life. I am so lucky to have known such an amazing girl.

To Sydney, & those who love her.
We all carry a very heavy heart over this loss.
This tragedy has only emphasized the fragility of life, and the value of each experience we share.
At URI, I learned the real meaning of community and how vital it is to our existence.
I had never felt so embraced by a community than the one I fell into in Rhode Island. In our groups, there was a strong thread of alliance, understanding and acceptance. It should be remembered how at home Sydney was able to make you feel. I feel lucky to have had our silly times together on Fortin with Sinna and Sydney and all of the other wonderful friends we were surrounded with.
To be free is an honor not everyone gets to experience, and I pray she has found vindication in whatever is next.
With Love,
Stella Elizabeth

I met Sydney my 1st day working at Walmart, she made an impression immediately. She was such a an amazing such a kind hearted soul. I remember telling her wow you are so patient I don't think I have ever seen you make a mean face at a customer she just looked at me and says I just think about it and realize there's nothing to get upset about. I was so amazed by her she said she wanted to take classes at bcc this spring to get certified to be an EMT and I just thought you are amazing to want to save lives and I told her I can't wait to see you on campus in the spring... I am so sorry to Sydneys family for your loss just know that she made such an impact on anyone that came in contact with her, just knowing her for 5 months I know what a gift she was to this earth and it will not be the same without her in it truly. You will not be forgotten Sydney please be at peace

I only knew Sydney for a short time from working at Walmart and she seemed to have such a kind soul. I could tell immediately. She was very quiet but finally started to open up more to me and I remember thinking "I want to be her friend". She had such long beautiful hair and flawless skin I was jealous of. May she rest in peace. I'm sorry life was unfair to you Sydney. You deserved better from this life!

My deepest condolences to the loved ones of Sydney. We all lost a beautiful soul. I met Sydney back in 2022 through their partner. The three of us spent a good deal of time together in which I got to know Sydney well. We had enough shared interests to talk for hours but we were different enough that we learned from each other. I’ll never forget Syd, my heart will always be with them. My heart goes out to all who are grieving this great loss.

Rest in power Sydney. Knowing you was a privilege. I am absolutely heartbroken. Syd was such a kind and smart person.
My absolute complete condolences to Sydney’s family and loved ones. We used to talk for hours sharing software code, and helping each other learn more and more, which is a rare find. I learned so much from them, and saved me so much time scratching my head and not throwing computers.
I met them about a year ago, and we would talk for hours and hours and anything. Never failed to make me laugh, and whenever I got the notification that they sent me a message it always made me happy. I wish I had more time with them, and was able to meet them in person which we were planning on for a very long time, but life happened and timing never worked out which I regret so so much. I’ll miss our conversations and cherish the ones we had.
Rest easy friend. I’ll miss you with all of my heart.

My deepest condolence to the Phillips family and to all those who know and are friends with Sydney. I was Sydney's roommate from 23-24 and I always remembered them having a kind and gentle soul. May god look over her soul and her family. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who loved Sydney.

My deepest condolences to those who also had the privilege of knowing Sydney, I met Sydney 7 years ago in the summer of 2017 and we became fast friends, she was the kindest and sweetest person to those lucky enough to get close with her. She encouraged me to clean up and helped me graduate highschool, there wasn't anyone I knew who was more skilled in mathematics than her, and I fully owe my diploma to her grace. We shared so much together and grew into our womanhood together, I consider her my sister in every sense and I will never forget our hours spent crying on each other's shoulders when the world felt so cruel as lonely trans children.
I miss you so much Syd, I'll see you in the next life, I promise.
Rest easy sister

Dear loved ones of Sydney,
I am absolutely heartbroken as I’m sure you are, also. Sydney was so special, so loved, and everyone who met her only had sweet things to say. I met Sydney online about five years ago and we quickly hit it off. She was shy and quiet, yet bursting with personality. I encouraged her to join me at the University of Rhode Island, and I’m very glad that she did. She made many friends, had meaningful experiences, and was always searching for the next adventure. Through Sydney I met Sarah, and Sarah and I became friends. Sydney was one of my best friends and she and Sarah became my roommates for a time, from May, 2023 to May, 2024 in Narragansett, Rhode Island. As roommates, we spent a Christmas together, Valentine’s day, had a Halloween party and a St. Patrick’s Day party. We would all walk to the Cumberland Farms convenience store up the street for slushies and gummy worms. We cooked dinner for each other. We watched countless episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. We went to live music shows, and Syd would head straight for the mosh pits. But most of all, we spent time together.
Sydney invited me to spend Thanksgiving with her and her family in New York one year, and I gladly went. In Long Island, I was seen immediately as family. Syd was blessed to be surrounded by such loving company, at home and at school. Her friends became my friends, and my friends became hers. I wish I could thank her for everything.
My heart hurts as I recall these memories. But they are all good memories. All of my memories with Syd are good memories, and I think that’s very telling.
With so much love,
Sinead (Sinna) Vaughan
