Edward R. Konopa, who was known as Ed, Dad, Pop-Pop and Coach K, passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 83 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY, after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on February 26, 1941, in Bridgeport, CT, Ed grew into a man deeply loved and admired for his unwavering dedication to family and his immense passion for gymnastics.
Ed's educational journey began at Hill House High School in New Haven, CT, and continued at Southern Connecticut State University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees. His commitment to education seamlessly transitioned into a lifelong career. In 1976, Ed founded BK Gymnastics Center, which he owned and coached at until 2021. His tireless dedication to the sport and his athletes was evident in the long hours he spent coaching, always with boundless energy and pride. Through his work, he inspired hundreds of young gymnasts, many of whom carried his lessons throughout their lives.
