Obituary

Edward R. Konopa, who was known as Ed, Dad, Pop-Pop and Coach K, passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 83 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY, after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on February 26, 1941, in Bridgeport, CT, Ed grew into a man deeply loved and admired for his unwavering dedication to family and his immense passion for gymnastics. Ed's educational journey began at Hill House High School in New Haven, CT, and continued at Southern Connecticut State University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees. His commitment to education seamlessly transitioned into a lifelong career. From 1967 to 1996, Ed served as a Physical Education teacher in West Babylon, enriching the lives of countless students with his enthusiasm and supportive nature. In 1976, Ed founded BK Gymnastics Center, which he owned and coached at until 2021. His tireless dedication to the sport and his athletes was evident in the long hours he spent coaching, always with boundless energy and pride. Through his work, he inspired hundreds of young gymnasts, many of whom carried his lessons throughout their lives. Beyond his professional endeavors, Ed was a man of diverse interests. He was an avid sports fan, a lover of gardening, enjoyed traveling and spending summers with his family by the pool. . Ed also cherished his Slovakian heritage, which influenced many aspects of his life. Family was the cornerstone of Ed's world. He is survived by his loving wife, Valerie Konopa; son, Kenneth Konopa and daughter-in-law, Allyson Konopa; daughter, Kristin Konopa; grandchildren, Kaya, Bruce, Koa, Jacob, Lola, Ruth, and Hannah; brother, Robert Konopa; and nephew, Jason Konopa. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Anna Konopa, and his brother, Peter Konopa.

.

Ed was a steadfast supporter of his grandchildren's various activities, from sports to theater, always encouraging and celebrating their hard work and achievements. As much of a sports fan as he was, his favorite was to be a spectator at one of his grandchildren’s events. A service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at Chapey Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Chapey Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance during this difficult time. Ed's legacy of passion, dedication, and love will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
