Obituary
Edward R. Konopa, who was known as Ed, Dad, Pop-Pop and Coach K, passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 83 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY, after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Born on February 26, 1941, in Bridgeport, CT, Ed grew into a man deeply loved and admired for his unwavering dedication to family and his immense passion for gymnastics.
Ed's educational journey began at Hill House High School in New Haven, CT, and continued at Southern Connecticut State University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees. His commitment to education seamlessly transitioned into a lifelong career. From 1967 to 1996, Ed served as a Physical Education teacher in West Babylon, enriching the lives of countless students with his enthusiasm and supportive nature.
In 1976, Ed founded BK Gymnastics Center, which he owned and coached at until 2021. His tireless dedication to the sport and his athletes was evident in the long hours he spent coaching, always with boundless energy and pride. Through his work, he inspired hundreds of young gymnasts, many of whom carried his lessons throughout their lives.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Ed was a man of diverse interests. He was an avid sports fan, a lover of gardening, enjoyed traveling and spending summers with his family by the pool. . Ed also cherished his Slovakian heritage, which influenced many aspects of his life.
Family was the cornerstone of Ed's world. He is survived by his loving wife, Valerie Konopa; son, Kenneth Konopa and daughter-in-law, Allyson Konopa; daughter, Kristin Konopa; grandchildren, Kaya, Bruce, Koa, Jacob, Lola, Ruth, and Hannah; brother, Robert Konopa; and nephew, Jason Konopa. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Anna Konopa, and his brother, Peter Konopa.
.
Ed was a steadfast supporter of his grandchildren's various activities, from sports to theater, always encouraging and celebrating their hard work and achievements. As much of a sports fan as he was, his favorite was to be a spectator at one of his grandchildren’s events.
A service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 2024, at Chapey Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Highway, West Islip, NY. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Chapey Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance during this difficult time. Ed's legacy of passion, dedication, and love will forever be cherished by those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to help create a memorial scholarship in his name, at West Babylon Senior High School.

When Ed & I were at SCSC, many Fridays he would take me to the New Haven train station or the Bridgeport ferry so I could the weekend in East Islip. Once we both settled in Suffolk, many evenings with our wives Val & Georgette we would meet for dinner at one of many local restaurants and talk about families. I have lost a very special friend far too soon in life.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Ed was my gymnastics coach and gym teacher when I went to West Babylon. He was also one of my clients when I worked at the cpa office which took care of his accounting. He also sat with me while I did his payroll taxes. He will be missed.

What do say about a man who despite not knowing you offers to help you get into college and follows it up with helping you find summer jobs. I was an indoor track athlete that Ed talked into joining his brand new gymnastics team. As fate would have I became a college gymnasts, a coach and a successful business owner. Ed was a friend, a college, a mentor and a great person. They do not make his kind anymore. Rest in peace my friend with all the other great coaches.
