Obituary

Frank Anthony Nocerino, 72, passed away on August 23, 2024, in North Massapequa, NY, after a courageous battle with an illness stemming from his supporting the rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center following the attacks on September 11, 2001. He was surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 26, 1952, in Brooklyn, NY son of Dominick and Mary, Frank dedicated his life to serving his community, a commitment that spanned over five decades. Frank's unwavering dedication was most evident in his 53 years of service with the North Massapequa Fire Department, serving as Chief of the Department in 1982 and most recently as a Commissioner for 40 years. He served as the President of the Association of Fire Districts of both the State of NY and Nassau County and was elected to the AFDSNY Secretary/Treasurer role which he held for many years. He was a dedicated supporter of youth athletics that began when he coached his children’s many sports and this dedication lasted over 40 years. He was committed to both Plainedge Bobcat Football and Farmingdale Youth Baseball leagues for many years when his children were involved. His compassion continued and is evident as a proponent of youth sports and he was inducted into the Farmingdale High School Wall of Fame in 2003, and he had the esteemed honor of being inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame just this past year. He was an official for 39 years and received the National Football Foundation’s Official of the Year and was the recipient of LIAFO’s Harold Connolly Award for outstanding service. He was the current President of the Section VIII Official’s Coordinating Council.

He was involved in many other community service organizations including the Farmingdale Men’s Club, most recently held the roles as the Chairman of the Republic Airport Commission and Vice President of the Firefighter’s Charitable Foundation. His passion for community service extended into his professional life as well, where he most recently held the esteemed position of Town of Oyster Bay Commissioner of Parks until his retirement. He started his career immediately after graduating high school at Newsday, where he worked for 20 years. His work not only enriched the lives of those in his immediate community but also set a standard of service in the surrounding areas. He is survived by his loving wife, Gerry, and their children: Kristen, Diane and husband Joe (nee Catalano), Michael and wife Julie (nee Fenimore), and Deborah. Frank was a cherished grandfather to Madelyn, Juliana, Michael, Lily, Dominick, Dylan, Mason, Michael, Annalise, and Roman. He also leaves behind his brother, Ralph.

Visitation will be held at Chapey Funeral Home in Bethpage, NY, on Tuesday, August 27, from 7-9 PM, and Wednesday, August 28, from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Thursday, August 29, at 9:45 AM at Maria Regina Church in Seaford, NY followed by burial at Pinelawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Firefighter's Charitable Foundation. Frank's legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the lasting contributions he made to his community. His family, friends, and colleagues will remember him as a pillar of strength, compassion, and dedication.
