Dr. Clyde Irving Payne (March 15, 1936 - August 7, 2024) Dr. Clyde Irving Payne, a distinguished educator and administrator, passed away on August 7, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and profound impact on countless students. A passionate advocate for education throughout his life. Clyde I. Payne, born to Clyde Adair Payne and Marie Elizabeth Payne, was raised in Westbury, NY. He graduated from Westbury High School in 1953, where he was President of the National Honor Society. His enthusiasm for teaching was ignited by his 7th and 8th grade math teacher, Ms. Cline.
Clyde pursued higher education at the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, now SUNY Albany, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. His professional journey began in 1958 as a math teacher at West Babylon High School. In 1963, he demonstrated early leadership as the Chairman of the Math Department at East Islip High School and contributed to educational outreach through his work with the MIT/Wellesley Upward Bound Program and Suffolk Community College.
In 1964, Clyde earned a second Master's degree in Mathematics, and in1979, he completed his Doctorate in Education at Indiana University. Most of his administrative career was in the East Islip School District. His true joy came as the Principal of East Islip High School where he coined “The EI Pride” mantra. He also served as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Wyandanch School District. Additionally, he served as Dean of the School of Education at Dowling College.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Clyde was deeply involved in his community. He was a devoted member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church by- thesea in Bay Shore, NY where he served faithfully as a vestry member and warden for sixty-one years. He chaired the Board of Trustees at South Shore University Hospital and served on the Board of Trustees at North Shore University Hospital.
.
In 1962, Clyde married Connie Broadus of Rankin, PA. A devoted husband and father, he cherished time with his family, offering unwavering support and encouragement. Clyde was a man of character who found joy in traveling, bird feeding, jazz music, fine dining, and a good martini.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Adair Payne and Marie Elizabeth Payne; his sister, Mildred Miles; his grandson, Aaron Jones; and his brother-in-law, Norris Williams. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Constance Payne; their three children: Monica Payne of Laurel, MD; Michelle (Harvey) Jones of Bear, DE; and Marc (Crystal) Payne of Silver Spring, MD; and his three cherished grandchildren, Taylor Jones, Erica Jones, and Ashley Payne. Clyde also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Juanita Williams of Willingboro, NJ, and Joan (John) King of West Palm Beach, FL, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
His profound contributions to education and community service will be remembered with great respect and admiration. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

My sincerest sympathies to the family of Dr. Payne. He was my high school principal in the late 80’s and instilled in us all to have “EI Pride!” I can still hear him belt this out during his morning announcements. Thanks Dr. Payne for leading us all with pride!

Dr. Payne was an inspiration to me during my time at Dowling. He would participate in student activities, and had an open door policy, that I utilized frequently. I am forever grateful that he thought enough of me to award me the Scholarship that was named in his honor and pen me a letter of recommendation. He will truly be missed.
