Obituary
Sparks, Robert John “Bob”, at the age of 92, passed peacefully on July 20, 2024 after battling heart failure for several years. He is survived by his beloved wife Marylou, and children Catherine Desjardins (Paul), J.Kevin, Jeffrey (Claire), Cynthia Dreher (Robert), and predeceased by sons Christopher, Bobby, and daughter Marylou. He was a cherished and loving grandfather of 9 and great grandfather of 6.
Bob was born in Tottenville, Staten Island. He was a New Year’s Eve Baby born on December 31, 1931. In High School, he played basketball and baseball. He graduated high school at age 15 and attended Wagner College. He married one of the opposing team ‘s cheerleaders (Marylou Matthews) and went on to create a large loving family. Bob started his professional career on the Cotton Exchange and continued on Wall Street as a stockbroker until his retirement as a VP with Herzog, Heine and Geduld.
Bob moved his family to Babylon, NY in the mid 50’s. He joined the Babylon Volunteer Fire Department and stayed a proud member of the Sumpwams Hose Company for 60 plus years. He was one of a few members that never needed to be issued a new uniform as his size never changed. He was part of the marching band, playing the drum at all parades and functions. He was active at St Joseph’s Church and an usher for over 40 years. Bob was an avid skier and taught his children to ski at Windham Mountain where he spent most winter weekends.
.
Bob and Marylou became snowbirds after retirement. He was a member and frequent MC at the Ft. Lauderdale Country Club’s comedy nights and was always the life of the party. He played the organ and accordion for his family and friends. He had an amazing memory for jokes and loved to play practical jokes on friends. He became a volunteer at an Equine Center that worked with handicapped children. He also volunteered at the Science Museum in the children’s department. Bob always had a gentle and fun manner with children and animals.
Bob’s humor and storytelling will not only be missed by his family and friends, but the friends of his children and their children. Once you met Bob, you never forgot the twinkle in his blue eyes, the elfish grin and his warm embrace.
A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday July 27th , 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Babylon, NY. Reposing at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy. (1/4 mile west of the Robert Moses Causeway.) on Friday, July 26th from 3:00PM until 5:00PM and 7:00PM until 9:00PM. www.chapeyfamily.com.
