Obituary
Joseph Candela passed away Thursday July 4th in Jupiter Florida at the age of 83. Joseph was born in New York hospital on January 15, 1941 to his parents Adeline and Salvatore Candela. He was raised in Harlem until relocating to the Bronx with his parents, brothers Ralph and Salvatore and sister Barbara where he attended Evander Childs High School. Joseph served his Country by joining the United States Army in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1962. He started his professional career in the Local 28 Sheet metal union around the time he was starting his personal life, marrying his wife Irene of 59 years. Together they raised their family, daughters Yvonne and Maureen and son Gary in Bethpage NY where they would call home for 53 years. Due to a tough economy, he left the sheet metal union and ambitiously started a roofing company, Candela Construction, which thrived for 30 years and employed many young people from the neighborhood. Some of his many other accomplishments in life include receiving a fifth degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate as well as a Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu. Later in life Joseph went back to school and became a licensed Massage Therapist where he used his knowledge of martial arts pressure points and holistic therapies to run another successful small business. He was a natural athlete and completed 2 triathlons after the age of 45. To know him was to love him, whether you knew him as Joe, JoJo or Mr. “C”. Of all Joe’s accomplishments he took the most pride in being a grandfather to his three grandsons Nolan, Jack and Nicky. “Grandpa Joe” was truly his favorite name. Joseph was preceded in death by both his parents, his sister Maureen and his brother Sal “Sally boy” Candela. He is survived by his beloved wife, his three children and three grandchildren as well as many others that loved him.

I had the privilege of meeting the Candela’s when they moved into The Sheridan at Hobe Sound in Florida. Immediately, I had a special connection with the entire family. Joe was the “Jokester”. Always ready to share just one more joke with all the care staff. Although our time together was not lengthy, it was very meaningful. Their apartment was right across from the nurses station which meant we got to share many things upon their arrival or departure. And Joe always entered his apartment by yelling for “Irene”, the love of his life. We miss you Joe and know you have repeated all your jokes, over and over to all your friends in heaven. Our love and condolences to Irene and the entire family.

I have known the Candela family for over 65 years. Ralph was my best man. Joe always had a smile on his face and had a great sense of humor. I hold a reunion every year for the last 20 plus years consisting of many, many neighborhood friends. Joe always attended. He lived in Bethpage, 2 towns away from my home. We had lunch together on a couple of occasions. Several years ago he did some work on my house. One project he did was the installation of a folding staircase to my attic. Years later he would kid me and say : “ Wow,that staircase didn’t fall yet”. He was and will always be a great friend whom I will never forget. Rest in Peace Joe.

As a youngster I was always so excited when cousin JoJo was coming to visit us in Dobbs Ferry. In my eyes he was the definitive “Cool Guy”. Always affectionate, always a smile, always fun. Love you Buddy.

Joe was a great lover of music, especially Rock & Roll ! The oldies was the Icon of our times and he would buy many records as well as Ralph, Sally boy and myself. Joe would bring his friends up our house to listen to the music and dance. He loved to dance the Lindy and was a
good dancer. His favorite friends that visited us was Paul Paulino, The Emperor; they called him. Jimmy Cusey, Joey Ioney and Bobby Ferro. During his younger years, Joe played the drums at our house that my parents bought for him. It was a Christmas present that Jojo wanted ! And Sally boy played the Guitar often. We all had a lot of fun listening to all the music played by my 2 brothers. It was a happy atmosphere that Jojo contributed to while we were all growing up ! His presence was and is evermore instilled in my HEART. LOVE YOU JOE.

Jojo always had a laugh and a smile.
That is how I'll remember him.
It was so nice to spend time with him on my last visit to New York.
I wish we had the chance to meet up down here in Florida.
Those we love are never more than a thought away.
With that memory, you will live in our hearts forever.
Volare nel blu, dipinto di blu!
With love

I grew up in the Gun Hill Projects, a friend of Joe's brother Ralph. Joe and his group of Friends were thought of as the older guys, to me Joe stood out. He was special and well respected.
Later in life Joe reached out to me insisting I apply for my veteran's benefits which I had neglected to do. Joe helped with the application process. I'm now receiving benefits and have a lot to thank him for. Joe will be missed by all. My sincere condolences to the family.

Cousin Jojo, always upbeat with a smile and a laugh to share! I really appreciate the effort he made to keep in touch and to get together on my visits on NYC, driving a long way from Bethpage into the city for dinner. My father (also Joseph Candela) waited a long time for a son, and in the meantime, Jojo was like a son to him.
In the 40's my dad wore his late mother's wedding ring, and when my mother met him on a beach outing, he had Jojo along for the day, and she was sure that he was married and that Jojo was his son!
I love this snapshot of young Jojo by the East River, looking spunky, dressed to the nines.
Rest in Peace my cousin!

I can still hear his voice. I know one day I'll forget what it sounds like.....but today, I can still hear him and my heart is joyful. The memories are too many to list, the years of our families intertwined keep a smile on my face as I realize my Uncle Joey is no longer a phone call away. When I told dad, I saw a piece of him die, they WERE brothers. I'd like to think that my mom and your dad are now with God... back to being healthy and restored to their younger bodies, laughing and joking, talking about times past and sharing the COUNTLESS memories of a lifetime.
