Obituary
George Scott Clanton was born in Astoria, Queens on January 6, 1941, and left us on June 16, 2024. He was the only child of Edith Todd Clanton and William Clanton. Shortly after graduating from William Cullen Bryant HS, he joined the U.S. Marines.
George worked as a serviceman at General Electric, as well as a skilled mechanic for several years. He later became a firefighter at the FDNY Engine 46, Ladder 27 from 1970 and excelled on the job, leading him to become a Fire Marshal from 1977 until 1984. After suffering an accident on the job that led him to retire, he continued his dedicated service to his brothers for the remaining days of his life. He always said, “The brotherhood of the fire department is like no other, they are a family for life”.
George’s greatest pleasures in life were his family, the New York Fire Department brotherhood, giving a helping hand to anyone in need, and spending his time surrounded by the peace and serenity of his home in upstate N.Y. He was a man of character, witty sense of humor, and many hobbies. He had an extraordinary mind and would often offer advice or offer to find solutions. He was also great with his hands. He spent time rebuilding Volkswagen engines and motorcycles or giving it a go on almost anything.
.
He enjoyed his children, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. He taught them the value of hard work, the ropes of upstate life, busting chops, and the importance of keeping their word. He enjoyed hunting, country music and Ballentine Ale.
George is survived by his sons, Daniel and Micheal, his grandchildren Victoria, Alexander, Daniel, his great grandson Anthony, his daughter-in-law Julia, and his cousins Bobby Todd, Billy Todd, Lenny Alexander and Carol Ann Greiger. He is preceded in death by his daughter Deborah. He leaves behind his surviving FDNY brothers and joins the ones that went before him.
A memorial visitation is planned for George on Sunday, June 30, 2024 from 3-7 at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home at 20Hicksville Rd. Bethpage, NY 11714
In honor of George S. Clanton, please consider a charitable donation to the FDNY Foundation in lieu of flowers.
