Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our mother, Joan (Connell) Poulos, who was brought home to heaven on June 13th after a beautifully lived life. Full of love, laughter, and resilience, she touched the lives of all who knew her.
Joan was born in 1929 and grew up in Astoria Queens the second child of Irish Catholic parents Alfred and Norma Connell. The had an older Brother Alfred and twin siblings Jimmy and Anne. Growing up she attended the local Catholic Elementary school at Immaculate Conception and attended an all-girls Catholic High School, St. Jean Baptiste, in Manhattan. In 2022 she attended her 75th High School reunion.
In 1953 she married Cosmos (Michael) Poulos, a WWII Naval veteran also from Astoria. They bought a home a year later in 1954 in North Massapequa, an area that was surrounded by potato farms. Joan was the last original owner on the block. She is one of the founding parishioners of Maria Regina Parish having attended Mass since the times it was served behind A&S Pork store on Broadway. She was also a member of the Rosary Society.
Joan had worked as an administrative assistant during her working years and retired from MHT/Chemical bank. She loved shopping and gift giving. As a child of the depression, she didn’t throw anything away but rather saved things for another use! In her Catholic home she faithfully displayed the Crucifix, angels and statues of the blessed mother. There was always a rosary about or a miraculous medal nearby.
.
She loved a party and to be with friends and family. She was great at having fun and loved being surrounded with people and being silly. When invited out she rarely said no – she was always up for anything. She wanted to go and join and not miss out. She was the original FOMO! She was very creative and an amazing artist.
Joan will be remembered for her warm smile, joyful personality, her Irish twinkling blue eyes, her hearty laugh and her famous taco salad.
Joan is survived by her 3 children Katherine (Thomas), Kim (Scott) and Nick (Kathy). She was the loving, proud grandmother of her 8 Grandchildren Deanna, Jenna, Nicholas Cosmos, Vincent, Rebecca, Andrea, Nicholas and Michael. She was the beloved Great Grandmother to Bella, Thomas, Kylie, Jack and Nora.
May the angels rejoice at her homecoming.

Kim, Scott and the rest of the family. I was privileged to meet and speak with your mother/grandmother several years ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time and may you only have fond memories of your mother.

Dear Kim, Kathy and Nick, I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom was a special lady and everyone who knew her, loved her. I enjoyed being grandma #2 whenever we shared a holiday. She never failed to ask about my family and always had a story to tell me. Joan had a life well lived and was an inspiration to me. I will miss her too. As we used to say every time we parted, see ya later alligator!
