I was truly blessed to have Mr. Hartill as a principal. I remember him visiting the Early Childhood Education class and encouraging those of us that would be pursuing teaching as a career in the future. He was always a warm presence, kindhearted and enthusiastic. It was evident that he cared about his students. He could also make you laugh until you were in tears. Rest in peace Mr. Hartill. You will be greatly missed.
With Deepest Sympathy to your family,
Christina DeGregorio

I have fond memories of Uncle Ken from as far back in my childhood as I can remember. Trips we took and things he did with us stand out in my mind. As a small child, I remember my brothers and me “attacking” him whenever he came over to visit. I remember many holiday visits and dinners over the years. I never had the pleasure of being a student of his, but to this day I run into people who were students, co workers and acquaintances who all remember him fondly. More recently, I am grateful he was able to travel to a family wedding and his sister’s 80th birthday party. It is a rare thing to get so many of us together. I know it has been hard recently and that he is now in a better place now without pain. Rest in Peace Uncle Ken.

I, like many, was so blessed and fortunate to have someone like Ken Hartill in my corner growing up. Not only did he support me in high school, he helped guide me in my adulthood. In 1989, I went to him for advice on whether or not to become a teacher. In 2004, I got a substitute position in the West Islip school district where he was principal! It was at West Islip High School that I received the call offering me the principal position at Harriet Eisman Community School. How lucky was I to be able to run down to the principals office that day at West Islip, and tell Mr. Hartill I got the job?! He hugged me, told me he was proud of me and We both cried. It was then that I promised myself I would always fight for what was best for kids even if it didn't win the popular vote. Just like Mr. Hartill.
If it wasn't for him, I would have never become an educator. He taught me how to advocate and to volunteer and to leave my ego at the door.
Thank you Mr H for being the best.

Not many high school principals keep the balance of mentor, leader, and kind hearted person. Mr. Hartill was always the principal that supported students in any activity they chose to pursue, any challenge they had, and always had a smile on his face walking the hallways. Many students that walked through the halls of West Islip High School are better people because of his leadership and guidance.

Mr. Hartel inspired me to become a teacher. He was an educator at Carey who really cared for kids in a time when education was generally poor for the average student. He inspired me and gave me tough love which is what I needed in 1983. He profoundly touched my life and I have never forgotten his influence. He also had great taste in music. Deep bows of respect for his legacy.

So sorry to here of Ken's passing. He was my class of 1972 advisor at Carey High School. He was kind and helpful. He taught me how to be a leader. We became friends over the years. I later taught at Carey and we kept in touch when he moved to West Islip High. He was a very sweet man. My sincere condolences to Diane and Matthew and the entire family.

Mr. Hartill had a positive impact on so many students at H. Frank Carey. As a member of the class of 1990, I will always remember him as firm but fair and respected by many. He did what was right for the students (& I suspect, the faculty), even when it wasn’t in his best interests politically. With the benefit of hindsight and becoming a parent myself, I have realized how rare and exceptional he was as a vice principal. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Ken was a wonderful man. I remember him fondly as a good leader who wanted the best for his students when he was the principal at West Islip High School. He was principal there when all three of my children passed through the high school and I know they all thought highly of him. I got to know him through my time in the PTA and then knew him more personally over the years when his son and my middle child studied karate under the same Sensei. Since his retirement I would see him occasionally around town and always enjoyed chatting with him while we walked the annual YMCA Judi Run together. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. He will be missed.

To The family of Ken, I am so sorry to hear of Ken‘s passing. He was one of my favorite administrators, having re-careered from the corporate world. It was difficult starting in a new field. He was always there for me:helpful, informative, and insightful. He also helped me, in my personal life, when I was looking for a school for my gifted child and he recommended BAY SHORE high school. I moved there and never looked back. It was the most wonderful experience. He was right. I also enjoyed running into him and his wife as I walked the Brightwaters neighborhood. I will always remember him as a caring and wonderful person, the likes of which are few to come by in administration these days . Praying for The family and so thankful to have known Ken. Sincerely, Connie Allen, West Islip foreign language teacher.

A tremendous loss to so many. No equal as a teacher, administrator. Ken was a role model for me and so many very young teachers at Carey in the late 60's and beyond. A tremendously caring, intelligent, gentle, perceptive mentor you could always go to for advice, be it on education or life in general. A great listener, able to use his wealth of experience and sense of humor to motivate and guide both students and peers......Kenny - you were so loved by so many and you will be so missed......Sincere condolences to his wonderful family. He will remain in the thoughts and prayers of so many of us. An unforgettable man.

From a fellow West Islip graduate; Mr. Hartill was kind, caring, and a wonderful man to interact with throughout the day. As a new student starting 10th grade at the high school, he made me feel welcomed. He will be missed in the community. I was sad to see him retire as principal of West Islip High, years ago.

Mr. Hartill was an absolutely wonderful and inspiring teacher. I believe we were his first teaching experience- class of 1968, Carey High. He was tall, handsome, smart, and had a wonderful smile and such a gentle character. We loved him from his first day. He was the teacher who got me interested in politics and the idea of a global community; I went on to work in local and state politics and even eventually elected as a delegate to a presidential convention. Mr. Hartill was a model for us all and I send my heartfelt condolences to his family. Much love and light to celebrate his wonderful soul.

Mr. Hartill was one of my favorite teachers from Carey High School. I was in his Political Science/ Economics class from Sept. 1968 to June 1969. On our first day of class, I raised by hand and said, “You play ball with us, we play ball with you.” The class found it funny, but Mr. Hartill Did Not. At the 30 Year Reunion of Class of 1972, I was the D.J. I made the announcement that Mr. Hartill requested a song by The Spice Girls. He walked up to me and said, “Very Funny, Don’t Do It Again.” May he rest in Peace
