Edward G. Colligan, age 81. Loving husband of 56 years to Eileen (nee Lee); adoring father of Mary Ann Bergen (Eric) and Michelle McDonald (Michael); grandfather of Patrick, Michael and Bridget Bergen, and Sean, Keira and Niamh McDonald; son of the late Mary (nee Curran) and Edward J. Colligan; brother of Eileen Colligan (David), Mary Sullivan (Dennis), Patricia Tessitore (Gordon, deceased), Nora McBrien (William), Margaret Kiernan (Najib), Christine Wilson (Frank, deceased), Suzanne Sopko, Kathleen Hubner (Carl), Regina Hays (Al) and David Colligan; beloved uncle, great uncle, godfather and friend of many. Ed cherished family gatherings; dancing and vacationing with his wife and best friend; watching his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews shine in their many endeavors; tinkering with cars and appliances; and was very proud of his time serving the nation in the Air Force and as a Police Officer (NYPD and Suffolk County). He always made time to be present for friends, family, and God. He passed away January 23, 2024 in Grand Cayman (his favorite spot) with those he loved most beside. Eileen & Family: Please accept my sincere apology for not being in contact much sooner. When Jane (my much better half) informed me of Eddie's passing, even though I'm only too aware of losing so many loved ones and friends, especially in recent years. It seems we've all come closer to the "fullness of our years", so it shouldn't be as shocking as perhaps when we were all much younger, knowing we'll be apart until we ourselves are called, doesn't lessen the sadness. Eddie was among the closest friends I've ever had. Because of him, too, I was privileged to know and come to love his family, so much that this connection in my life was like a real kinship. I will miss this man just the knowledge that he was so available so easily, says much. I thank you for your note, for which I'm so grateful. The feelings are real! I will be sending a donation to T2T in Ed's memory. (Funny that it's among my favorite charities, too.) I will be calling you soon, too, because as you asked, I intend to "keep in touch". You guys have so much to be proud of in Eddie. I'm grateful to have seen and learned that. I know you're happy for him, as I am. Be well, please, and God bless you all! Art

My deepest sympathy to the Colligan Family, we all loved seeing Eileen & Ed return every year to Morritt’s Resort, they were the sweetest couple, Ed loved to hear about Ireland & would ask me every year “ did I go home to Ireland this year” they cherished their time spend at Morritt’s, & though it was tough for the family ,that Ed passed away in Cayman Islands, he saw here as his 2nd home.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
RIP Ed, from Michelle & all at Morritt’s Resort

Thank you so much, Michelle. He truly adored you. You were a highlight of his trip every year. He’d always be on the lookout for you as well as so many staff members there. You were all so kind to us during this time and we appreciate it so much. The trip will never be quite the same for us, but we’ll be sure to return. It truly was his second home and he loved spending time there just walking up the road and chatting to people. May Heaven look just like Grand Cayman. ❤️ ‘Til we meet again…

My condolences to all who knew and loved Ed so well and so much.
A little story that foretold Ed's big heart. It was around 1965. I somehow found myself late one night without a ride, about 15 miles from home. I was 16. It was cold and snowing and I started to hitchhike. It wasn't too long and a car stopped for me. The driver a young man, with a date! I was very happy that anyone stopped but happier still that it was Ed Colligan whose parents were my parents dearest friends.
His decision to stop for this kid meant so much. I have never forgotten it.

Dear Dennis,
Thank you for sharing that story - it truly summed up who he was to a tee. He’d stop for anyone - didn’t matter how far it took him out of his way. We could imagine how delighted he was too that it was YOU! Sending our love to you and your family, whom he was so fond of growing up with.

Gail and I, and the entire Lee family, deeply mourn the loss of our brother-in-law and friend Ed. His devotion to family and friends was renowned. He made the world a better place and with his passing there will be a void. One rarely encountered Ed without his engaging smile and readiness to tell a story.
The one word that embodies Ed Colligan is commitment. He was truly devoted to Eileen, Mary Ann, Michelle, Eric and Mike and his grandchildren and would do anything for his family. By extension, any activity by his grandchildren got his deep interest and involvement. My sister Eileen and Ed were married fifty-six years and are example of undying love.
Another quality he imbued was his dedication to the Catholic Church which was an integral part of his life and family. He was raised in a deeply Catholic family and worked to instill those values in his children as well.
If one spent any time with Ed, he would soon regale you with stories about his days in the Air Force, NYPD and SCPD. He loved the camaraderie and patriotism in both and was quick with anecdotes that always had us laughing.
We miss you Ed; your legacy is your family and that is something anyone would take pride in!
Love,
Larry and Gail

It is hard to imagine that someone that has been with us all these years has passed, but we have to cherish the good times he brought us. Uncle Eddie was always positive and engaging at parties and holidays, regardless of whether it was someone he knew their entire life, or was just introduced to. We could always count on him for a good story to keep things interesting and make us laugh.
He was a loyal supporter of his Catholic faith and Irish heritage, and stayed involved in numerous pursuits and causes throughout his life. He also encouraged everyone around him to pursue their goals and dreams in education, sports, careers, and any other challenges we took on while offering constant praise and support. He was a true family man that always put his family first and loved nothing more than spending time with the grandkids and extended family. Uncle Eddie will be missed.
Love,
The Lees -

My heart goes out to his entire family. This is such a great loss to family, friends and the community. Ed was a kind, living, genuine, fun loving man who I looked up to like a dad. He would pick me up from home any night of the week to stay at their house. Every time I came over he'd say,"Tracy's coming, I'm going to get a cake." I loved him beyond measure and will miss him greatly. Rest easy, Mr. Colligan. There is no more pain in Heaven.

Mr. Colligan you were truly one of a kind. Every time I would come to your house I would be laughing until my stomach hurt. You were naturally so funny and always the life of the party. I’m honored to have had the pleasure to know you, travel with you and have some of the funniest memories being in your presence. I still reference the Dunkin’ Donuts line that you yelled in the drive thru all the time. To the Colligan family I’m so sorry for your loss and will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Lauren Sciacca

Lauren, “the girl by the high school” - Thank you for writing and for all of your support during this time. We shared so many fun times together with you from the kitchen table to the Caymans. He always cared that your car was working and you were doing well in school and work. He would be so proud of you. We can never go into a Dunkin’ without thinking of him, which for us is often! Sending love. ❤️
