I had the pleasure of working with Mr. C. in the Appeals Bureau at Suffolk Legal Aid for a number of years. We had a wonderful professional relationship but, to be honest, it paled in comparison to our personal friendship. I am sure that most of you can relate to this: Almost immediately upon meeting him, I felt like he was a member of my family. He brought a contagious smile and jovial laugh with him everywhere he went, weaving them like threads through the tapestry of lives he touched. He had a uniquely Al-Cicale way of saying and doing things that built you up and made you feel special--and an uncanny ability to, without effort or deliberation, time those words and deeds perfectly on those days and at those moments where you maybe just weren't feeling your best. He had quirks, habits, and routines like none other that helped make him the loveable character he was: Treadmill in the morning, Greek yogurt in the afternoon, Judgment at Nuremberg seemingly weekly, and a customized Charlie Brown card for your birthday (my fiance I still have all of them and will hang onto them forever).
For Mr. C.'s loved ones, I of course extend my deepest, heartfelt condolences. You have no idea how proud he was of each and every one of you all (and how much he made sure everyone knew it). Trust me when I say that he loved you all--without condition--more than you all could possibly imagine. I am so so sorry for your loss. But I also have tremendous sympathy for those who, unlike you (and me), were not fortunate enough to cross paths with him because--let me tell you--they really missed out.
So rest forever in our hearts, Mr. C., and do so knowing that you are deeply missed and eternally cherished all who met you. "Aunt Ella" is nowhere to be found when I say, here in front of everybody, that you epitomized the phrase: "They don't make too many like him." I truly could not have asked for a better, more sincere, or more unforgettable family-like friend. And I truly could not be more grateful for whatever constellation of fortuitous events and circumstances brought us together and made it all possible.

Al and I met in 1951, the day we reported to Camp Lejeune, N.C. We had each enlisted in the U.S. MARINE CORPS to serve in Korea, but we seemed to be 'stuck' at Camp Lejeune, until a new Commandant created a "Volunteers go first" notification. Al was on duty and had to go to headquarters to pick-up the new orders and return them to our outfit. Before he did, he came into the Quonset hut barrack our platoon lived in and awoke me. We went to a lighted area and Alfred J. Cicale signed the "Volunteer Signature line" 1st, and handed it to me. I signed 2nd.
Before we left for Camp Pendleton, CA, for Advanced Infantry training, we saved a few days from our leaves to see Hollywood before reporting to Camp Pendleton. That unique experience is included in the book, "Hey, Mac, Where Ya Been", by Henry Berry. (Pressed for time and w/o a permission form, the author purposely mispelled Al's name as "Cicola".
I saw Al once in Korea, and again in civilian life when I was at college and he was in Law School; and again with his lovely wife Norma. They visited me in California for one of the more memborable reunions. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN. Semper Fidelis ole buddy. Condoleces to Norma and family
