William P. McGuire was born May 9, 1945 to Ellen and William McGuire, who were both Irish immigrants. His father was fighting abroad in World War II at the time of his birth. He grew up on the east side of Manhattan on 81st street among his cousins and family. He passed away on November 10th, 2023 at MSK. William was referred to as Bill by friends and family, and Billy to cousins he has known since childhood. Bill loved his family very much and is survived by his beloved wife, Susan, beautiful daughters Julie and Jessica, his brother Bryan (wife Joan), and is predeceased by sister Sally (Doyle). Bill is also survived by nieces Karen, Brian, Kerry, and great niece Riley, and great nephews Colin, Liam and Charlie. Last but not least, our dog Maddie, the sweetest loving Cavadoodle who loved to cover him with kisses and hugs, whom he loved so much and made us laugh with her antics.

Bill was a U.S. Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He retired from the NYPD in 2001 after 30 years as a Det. Lt. Commander. He loved being on the NYPD and being in charge of over 50 detectives solving crimes of robbery, homicide, and home invasions and oversaw the Asian Task Force, Gang Intelligence Unit, and Home Invasion Task Force. He loved his work on the NYPD and received over 50 departmental commendations. Occasionally, you would see him being interviewed on the news on major cases. After retirement he worked as a manager of the Special Investigations Unit in Manhattan for an insurance company and then as Village Administrator/Chief for the village of Old Field on Long Island for over 15 years. He was also a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 154th session, Quantico, VA, which was a special program offered to certain NYPD members. He was proud of this distinction. Bill was a born storyteller and loved to make people laugh. Often known as "Mr. Encyclopedia" for his extensive knowledge of history, politics, and any subject that came up, he had a fantastic memory for dates. His retention of facts was unmatched, which of course served him well at Comstat on the NYPD. He also remembered dates of important events in people's lives, and was able to recite dates of births, graduations, schools attended, weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays of not just immediate family, but of cousins both living and deceased. He was the go-to guy for any questions on family ancestry. It is going to be difficult to try to remember dates of events both family and historical, because what he had was a rare ability. A light has gone out in our lives forever, but I am sure he is entertaining his family and friends who have gone before him with his stories in heaven.
