Obituary
Dr. Ira P. Woletsky (born March 11th, 1954 to Rose and Chuck), passed away on November 9th, 2023.
Ira loved his family, and is survived by his beloved wife Karen, children Mark, Britlyn (husband, TJ), Alex (husband, Chris) and Jack, sister Lisa (husband, Tom), predeceased by sister Helene (Soren). Also survived by nieces Catrina and Taylor, grand-nephew Dane. Lastly, his utmost pride, his grandchildren - Tenley, Brooks, Jack, and Teddy.
As evidenced by his long-standing pediatric practice, Ira found joy in his patients’ smiling faces, or the ability to turn their frowns into smiles.
Lab-coat off, he loved to entertain family, be surrounded by his most adored friends, and be in the presence of his grandchildren. Not to be forgotten, a long day of golf at SoHo, ending with a quiet cocktail with Karen, of course.
Ira will be sorely missed, but we’ll find comfort in knowing that he is playing his best round of golf, with a scotch in hand.

I am extremely upset to this day about such a great dr and man’s death. I was personally his first patient over 40 years ago when he was brought into the practice with Dr.McManus . At that time I had tested positive for TB and Dr.McManus grabbed Dr.Woletsky from his office to to treat me. I was a little girl who could have lost my life it wasn’t for him knowing what to do. So of course my own daughter grew up knowing him as her dr. She had just turned 18 last year and he still so her for an emergency appointment. May he rest in peace. I will never forget him

You were not only our pediatrician, but our family friend. I personally admired you as someone who excelled in life, and becoming a true role model. I remember when I was little and you would come over our house to help decorate our Christmas tree, and the time you told us you were going to a University in Grenada to study to become a doctor. My mom was terrified, saying "omg, that sounds like such a far away place!" Unknowingly that one day I would work for that University, and was amazed at how many people remembered you from the time you began studying there, being one of St. George University's first medical students. The Dean of the School (until this day), shared fond memories of how you played on the basketball team and how much of a skilled student you were. In later years, I remember how you told me to begin weening my kids off the bottle, but I didn't listen to you, lol. My children both adored you and were always disappointed if they didn't get to see "Dr. Ira" at a doctor visit. They always looked forward to their yearly well visit, so they could quack, waddle and laugh at your silly jokes. I always loved talking with you and you knew how to make my children and I, feel at ease whenever they would get sick. I am still so shocked and heartbroken that you are no longer with us. But I know that God has even greater plans for you. I am sending my deepest condolences to your family, and I will never ever forget you. <3 Love, Carolyn, Christian and Courtney Miller

Our family is sad to hear of Dr Wolletsky's passing. He was our son and daughter's very first physician. We always felt that we were in good hands under his care and our children liked his sense of humor. We are thankful for the care he provided for so many and although his absence will be felt in the years to come, we can rest assured to know that his wings are coming in nicely by now.

Dr. Woletsky,
A Doctor of love, who cared for his patients with warmth. I met Dr. Woletsky 22 years ago and my family was welcome into his office and treated with the utmost care that can be bestowed upon a child. I have 2 older kids that have seen him until they aged out and I have a younger one that had seen him in September 2023. He made them laugh at every visit. He always inquired about their education and encouraged them to pursue their goals but most of all during their visit he would tell them to kiss their mom and let her know that you appreciate her. I cannot say enough about this great doctor/ pediatrician. My family heart is broken into pieces. My deepest condolences to his family and friends also the team of workers at his practice.
May his soul rest in peace

Dr Woletsky was truly a genuine and beautiful soul, from the birth of our first daughter he was so reassuring on my motherhood journey. Then came three more and his sense of humor was so great… he always questioned how we co- slept with our kids and managed to make more.. lol to my last princess born when he discovered her hospital band still on 1 week later!!! It was hysterical as a tired delirious mom and he was as great to acknowledge it!! My he rest in peace and I send prayers on behalf of all my family he will be missed!!

I am so saddened to hear this what a tremendous loss to our medical community. I remember the first time I met Dr. Woletsky November 9 1986 when I had my first born daughter. He once said to me that it would be easier to divorce my husband then to find a different pediatrician when I moved to Smithtown so I made that drive back to West Islip for a very long time. God bless his family may they find peace, love and prayers to help them through this very tragic event. He was the absolute best doctor!

Dr. Woletsky was an amazing doctor to our 5 kids, for the last 22 years he was a very important part of our lives. When our youngest son was diagnosed with cancer, he was by our side and always checking in making sure we were OK and helping in any way possible. He always listened to all my questions and had the greatest way of calming all my kids during visits to feel comfortable. When I told my kids the first things my boys said was who would make them quack again. Such a great man and doctor, we will miss him. I hope his family finds peace in knowing how many lives he touched and how loved he was. My deepest condolences to them all.

Dr. Woletsky was very influential in my life as my doctor. Growing up, I was very, very tall, and struggled with how I was treated by classmates. I was taller than my teachers at a young age, and I felt very much like an 'other.' He set me at ease when he saw how it bothered me. He was compassionate and wise. He was my doctor for my childhood, and even now in my late 30s, I reflect on how meaningful our brief moments together were. I often wanted to return to his office as a grown man, to tell him in person how important he had been. I hope his family finds peace in the knowledge that he was so important to many, and loved by so many, such that his memory will live on for many years to come. My condolences to all of them. I remember Ira as a best friend for a long time, starting in 4th or 5th grade, and all through adult life. Even though we lived on opposite ends of the country I have always felt a close connection to him even as we had very divergent paths in life. We cemented our friendship when I convinced him to try out for the Olivet Tigers baseball team, even though Ira thought he was not good enough to make the team. We both made the team and played together for the whole season. When the trophies were handed out everyone on the team got a nice trophy... except Ira. Ira received a trophy two or three times bigger than anyone else on the team. His trophy recognized him as the "Most Improved" player on the team. We all had trophy envy.
I think Ira never suffered from a lack of confidence ever again. He excelled in snow skiing, tennis and golf and I believe I have never been able to beat him in any of those sports, no matter how hard I tried. Ira was a great example to me in high school in his focus on both fun and study. He never took himself too seriously, and never looked down on others. Well balanced in every way he was a scholar in academics and a humble friend and classmate.
We enjoyed many good times together through high school and college and we subsequently remained close in friendship even as long tracts of time would pass between face-to-face meetings. I would not be overstating our friendship as one of love and respect. We had some differences between us but I think that love overcomes all.
I sincerely believe that the love of God overcomes all differences as well. Only the Lord knows the true relationship He and Ira had with one another, and who can know what went through Ira's mind in those last days before he passed. I know Ira was one of God's "Chosen People" and He used Ira in his practice of medicine to bring healing to many people, and even saved the lives of others. Yahwey, the God of Israel uses his people according to his sovereign authority and I am sure Ira was used by God to be a blessing to countless mothers and fathers and their children. He was certainly a blessing to me all these years.
God Bless you Ira and your family, and may you rest in the peace that passes understanding.
Sincerely,
JT

Now 46, I can remember the day that Dr. Woletsky walked in with my then pediatrician and told me that he would be my new Dr. I cried!! I think I may have told him no he would not because I adored my other pediatrician. I was not going to like him or let him look in my ears. Until he said wow guess what I see in your ear! I was intrigued when he said he saw Elmo and started doing character voices. I may have smiled and even laughed. He made going to the Dr so much fun! I would have never imagined that years later, he would be the pediatrician to every one of my kids. The best Dr ever. I remember sitting in his office and playing the little water games the ones when you would try to get the rings on the little stick as he would talk to my parents about my visit, and later my children did the same. Dr. Woletsky was kind, and compassionate, and always made you feel comfortable. He never made you feel like your questions and concerns were stupid. He loved what he did, and it showed. I can remember the pictures of his family in his office. I was sad when I heard the news. After all he had been a part of our family for many many years. My deepest prayers and condolences to his family. Well done good and faithful servant. Thank you for following the calling you were blessed with and taking care of so many. My condolences to the Woletsky family. Dr. Woletsky was my family’s pediatrician since 1984, and now my children’s. I will always remember the water toys in his office while we waited for him, him seeing Elmo and big bird in my ears as a kid, the pretzels I would patiently wait for before leaving my visit, to making my kids laugh at their appointments instead of cry. I will miss our conversations about his love for golf and his kind words and calming demeanor when I was being a nervous Mom, so compassionate, but knew when to be and when to joke. Dr. Woletsky, your office will never feel the same without you there, but your spirit will always be felt by everyone you’ve made a difference to. My family and I are truly saddened by the loss of Dr. Woletsky. He took care of my children for 18 years. He made them feel important and cared for. He was extremely funny and kept us amused each time we came. It was a nice personal touch for a doctor to talk to the kids on their level. What a great loss in our community. My condolences to his family and medical community. He will be missed. Rest in Peace

Dr. Ira Woletsky, throughout the years eventually went part time he said he was getting older and wanted to spend more time with his family. Remembered me and my brother by first name even after growing out of his office and bringing my son in the office. I remember pretzel rods offered at the front desk before allergies were a big thing. Dr. Woletsky was a kind, caring, funny, no judgment pediatrician. Through the years he had to recommend our family to go the ER or see a surgeon, scary to say the least. We travel 45+ minutes because my girls love him as much as I do and I would travel 3 hours if I had to.
Oct 2018 my first daughter was born and Dr Woletsky came to the hospital for her first visit. I will never forget… He stood in the doorway with a huge smile and open arms, after 15 years of not seeing him. Having a full circle moment was just so meaningful to me, I’ll forever cherish it. He spoke to my husband about remembering meeting ME for the first time and it was just such a magical moment for us.
My kids saw him last month and he had my 5 year old hysterically laughing with his silliness and awesome bedside manner. She adored him and was always so excited to tell him her updated life stories. When we last saw him in October, she gave him a huge hug and kiss on the cheek goodbye. She didn’t want to leave, she wanted to keep on chatting with her doctor BFF.
Dr Woletsky was always so grateful that we chose him for our own kids and he always remembered the little things. Always told me to say hi and give his love to my family, always asking for family updates. There will never be another doctor as special as that man, and I am so blessed and grateful that we had him in our lives my entire life. Rest peacefully Dr Woletsky. What a legacy. A true gem. Our world is shattered and he touched the lives of so many. This is just the worst possible news, and I am so sorry for this magnificent loss to the community. May his family and friends find peace in knowing how loved he was by everyone who encountered him.

He was such a great doctor to my children. I was so sad to hear this news today! He eased all my worries as a new mom and I’ll never forget in the chaos of having twins he looked at me and said “they are fine, how are you? It was profound to me. I couldn’t believe something so simple made me feel seen again.

Dr. Woletsky is a kind soul. He will truly by missed. His smile is contagious and forever in our family’s heart. He always made my sons feel comfortable, even through those awkward tween years. He always made them laugh when he would make them get down, walk and quack like a duck!! We will always remember you. My condolences to the family. The world lost a wonderful kind man.

The only pediatrician that I met that cared enough to ask about me and my pregnancy or postpartum and the only doctor I trust with my children. This is so devastating to the community of families he cared for and sincerest condolences to his family.
