Obituary

Kathryn Mary Watt, age 53, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on April 8, 2023. Katie was born on May 20, 1969 in Rockville Centre, NY and was the tenth of thirteen children of James J. Watt and Joan M. (nee Wayrick) Watt. She spent the early years of her life growing up in Massapequa, NY, where she attended Massapequa High School. Katie received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Molloy College and her Master’s Degree in Education from Dowling College. She went on to dedicate more than 30 years of her life as a teacher at various schools on Long island, including many years at St. Patrick’s school in Bay Shore. She also proudly taught Faith Formation at St. Jospeh’s Church in Babylon for 20 years. In 1994 Katie married her beloved husband Michael James Lavin of Massapequa and they were blessed with 4 sons during their 28 years together: Michael G Lavin of Dublin, Ireland, Brian J Lavin of Astoria, NY, Matthew C Lavin of Babylon, NY and Liam J Lavin of Babylon, NY. Katie was born to teach and loved every opportunity to inspire young minds, following in her father’s great footsteps. She started by helping her father do his gradebooks when she was in high school and continued working as a teacher until the last. Hundreds of children on Long Island were blessed by her enthusiasm and creativity, and she loved them all dearly.

Katie also loved to bake. Her famous chocolate chip cookies were directly responsible for many extra pounds on her family and friends, as well as her sons’ teachers and coaches. And she delighted in welcoming everyone into her home, particularly at the family’s annual raucous St Patrick’s Day parties (sorry neighbors…). Katie was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, and aunt, who adored her family. She is survived by a very large and devoted family including her mother Joan, her 10 brothers and sisters and their spouse’s, her 4 in-laws and their spouse’s, and more than 50 nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She will be remembered along with her father, James J. Watt, and her beloved brothers Joseph J. Watt and Raymond S Watt. Visitation will be Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy, West Islip, New York, 11795. Thursday April 13, 2023 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Mass will be 9:30 am Friday, April 14, 2023 at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 39 North Carll Avenue, Babylon, New York, 11702.
