Obituary
Anthony “Tony” (or Sonny to his immediate family) DeMotta (May 11, 1927-April 3, 2023) grew up in the Bronx, married his wife Barbara (nee Wilburn) in 1950, and moved his family to West Islip in 1957. He had a long, enjoyable, and successful career in insurance, and retired in the 1980s.
For Tony, friends and family were the greatest source of his joy. He was so proud to enjoy large family gatherings at Christmas parties, picnics, and weddings. We will remember him for his warmth and affection, his concern for others, his sharp mind, and of course, his signature humor and beautiful tenor voice. He had memorable “Dad-isms”: “Wrong again for the first time,” “My twin brother had a different mother,” and “Please wait just a 'minuet'.” Tony sang whenever possible: at family events, working around the house, making the Friday omelet, or doing the Sunday crossword. We all learned the words to most of the American songbook standards! He taught us tap dancing and the Lindy, and he could catch a pop fly in his mitt behind his back. Tony enjoyed golf and fishing and was a lifelong Yankees fan. We are so fortunate and blessed to have loved and been loved by a man of such grace, humility, and authentic happiness.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Tony is survived by five children and their spouses: Robert DeMotta (Karen); Richard DeMotta (Filomena); Susan Castagna (Joseph); Linda DeMotta; Jeanne Bruno (Donald). Tony enjoyed visiting with and singing to his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Frances Michaels and his brother Dr. Raymond DeMotta (Nancy) and predeceased by his sisters Jean Micalizzi and Paula Michaels. Additionally, Tony was proud of his large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews who often travelled from across the country for family gatherings.

Uncle Tony was by far the kindest, most caring and gentle man I have ever met. His love for all of his family knew no bounds. He always had a very contagious smile on his face. His beautiful singing made everyone stop what they were doing, watch and listen. He was music to our ears always. He was a true family man and the anchor that held our large extended family together. He will be missed by so many and touched the hearts of everyone he met. Until we meet again Uncle Tony.

Working for Mr Anthony DeMotta was a pleasure. He was a great man and has a kind soul. I felt loved around him anytime I’m on duty as a home health Aide. He made me laugh by picking a word from my statement when I’m talking to him and used it in a real song with his beautiful voice. May he rest in perfect peace until we meet again. I love you very much Mr Anthony DeMotta, my condolences to the family

Some people just make the world a better place to live. The words that we write about Uncle Tony are meant to be embraced by those that read them while hoping to capture what he has given us through knowing him. Love, humor, joy, music, and a wonderful example of how to be kind and decent. There were times it seemed his generosity didn’t know any bounds. We have his singing to listen to and countless images at weddings, picnics and Christmas parties. We will hold him in our hearts and pray for all his family. Our deepest condolences.

On Monday evening, I had a visit from a wonderful man who I last saw, said goodbye to, and cried with back in August of 1972. It was my last day working at the Continental Insurance Company, 80 Maiden Lane in the Wall Street District of lower Manhattan. I had been his secretary for the previous 4 years, and I always felt as though my life had been so blessed by being in the circle of people who were able to watch him consistently instilling confidence, calm, peace, good counsel and genuine caring to all who worked with or for him. I commuted 4 hours each day for the privilege of working for him. He would have been 96 years old on May 11, and I would have prayed for him and his family again as I have done before.
A few hours ago, Mr. DeMotta 'swept by my heart' in a single moment that was both a 'Hello' and 'See you again someday.' There was no doubt in my mind who it was... but I am now a short, fat, little old lady, and I thought it best to check online before sharing this momentary experience with my husband (who has been reminded many times over these years that I gave up working for Mr. DeMotta to marry him knowing we would move too far away for me to commute to New York). And so I found here the name of a man who should have been promoted to Assistant Secretary and moved up to the Executive floor of that company LONG BEFORE they finally gave him that recognition! The name of Anthony C. DeMotta... such a very good man... waiting to be honored with words and memories that can't possibly do him justice.
I have prayed for Mr. DeMotta so many times, but I have not spoken with him directly even once in all these years. I believe my Guardian Angel knows his... and so I was gifted that moment. As a young girl, my grandmother told me "God hears BEST the prayers that are said for us by other people." She was always right, and I have held those words in my heart for all my life. So I promise prayers of peace for you, Mrs. DeMotta, and all your family.
I will be at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville, Indiana each day of this Holy Week. I will offer a Rosary for Mr. DeMotta and ask Jesus to comfort each of your hearts.
With sympathy as you give him into God's Care,
Carol Gallucci
