Obituary
Mary Verdun Kolkmeyer (née Kirwan), 88, Bay Shore, NY, on March 18, 2023.
Born on December 28, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY to Michael and Rebecca, predeceased by her brother Thomas (Betty). Happily married for 66 years to Edwin Leon Kolkmeyer. Loving mother of Anthony (Sheila), Gerard (predeceased by Tracey), Mary Judith (James) and Kevin. Proud grandmother of Michael, Kelly, Jillian, Connor, Rebecca, Sarah, Hannah, Nathan, Sophie and Leon. Great-grandmother of William and Agnes.
Her life was centered around her faith and her family, she was a friend to all.
A proud graduate of St. Joseph’s High school in Brooklyn, she worked in Manhattan before meeting “Lonnie”, a young U.S. Navy sailor from Missouri, at a USO dance.
The young couple moved around between NY and Missouri before settling in Bay Shore in 1960. As the wife of a police officer, she kept her concern for his safety in-check, balancing the demands of his shift schedule, while providing a warm and loving home on Howells Road. She was right at home with the other mom’s on-the-block, and they made it the “happiest place on earth.”
She traveled throughout her life, from family road trips in the station wagon, to international travel. She attended all of her grandchildren’s special moments, to include baptism, first communion, school graduations, and sporting events, often traveling across the country to do so.
In 1977 she began working at the St John the Baptist DHS cafeteria where she developed new friendships with her co-workers, the staff and teachers and, most especially, the youngsters that passed through over the years.
She was fond of the TMC movie channel and crime dramas, would read every line of the daily newspapers, enjoyed her morning coffee, and an “occasional adult beverage cocktail”. Her humorous malapropisms on the English language are legendary. These interests were always second to her daily rosary and prayer cards. She will be missed by all.
