Obituary
Gertrude Ann “Trudy” Merrick, 92 years old, passed away peacefully on Friday January 13, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was a resident of Brightview Senior Living in Sayville. She formerly resided in Bay Shore and raised her children in Islip Terrace, NY. She was predeceased in death by her loving husband, Robert who passed in 1991.
Trudy was born on June 26, 1930, in Scranton, PA to the late James and Barbara (McGavin) Gannon. She was the third of four daughters, Romaine, and Margaret (both deceased) and Barbara. She graduated from Scranton Technical High School and worked at the International Correspondent Schools until she became a homemaker after the birth of her first child. Trudy and her beloved husband Bobby were married October 25th, 1952. Trudy lived for her family. She loved shopping for bargains, her cup of tea, and a “Perfect” Manhattan while listening to music or watching an old classic movie. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Bay Shore, NY.
Trudy is survived by her four children, James, Patrick (Madeline), Maureen Kairys (Andrew), Nancy Wolstedlund (Edward). She has eight grandchildren, Robin (Brian), Michael (Melanie), Erin, (Jonny) Timothy (Linda), Lindsay, Jennifer, Emily, (Thomas) and Kiley. She was also blessed with nine great grandchildren, Graham, Ryan, Liam, Ryleigh, Connor, Logan, Jack, Nolan and Charlie. Trudy was also survived by her sister Barbara Gardner of Reading PA and sister-in-law Betty Ostrander of Haskell, NJ. Not to mention, a very large extended family.
Funeral services will be held at The Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons West Islip Funeral Home, 1225 Montauk Hwy., (1/4 mile west of the Robert Moses Cswy.). Visiting Thursday 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial Friday 11:00 AM St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, Bay Shore, NY. Interment to take place on Saturday, 11:00 AM at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Main Street Route 435, Moscow, PA.
