Obituary

Luis Oscar León Carrillo, 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 31, 2022. Luis was born June 10, 1934 in Humacao, Puerto Rico to Rafael León and Carmen Carrillo. He later moved to reside in the United States, and attended Rice High School in Harlem, New York. He wed to his wife Dominga Rivera in 1956. After grade school, he found his passion in education; pursuing the start of a long list of qualifications. In 1956, he graduated with a B.A. degree from Iona College, located in New Rochelle, New York; and soon completing a M.A. degree from Hunter College, located in Manhattan, New York, in 1959. At this time, he also received a New York State Permanent Certificate as a Teacher of Spanish, also in 1959. Ultimately, after taking graduate courses throughout multiple different institutions such as Middlebury College, The University of Pittsburgh, Universidad Internacional in Saltillo, Mexico, St. John’s University, and Fordham University; he was rewarded a Ph.D. in 1978 after completion of course requirements through New York University. Throughout his education, he began his teaching experience in various high schools, and soon becoming a Professor, both assistant and associate; at multiple institutions between the years of 1957 to 1985. He also gained administrative experience, as he held executive positions throughout multiple institutions, including Chairperson on the Department of Modern Languages at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania in 1962, Personnel and Budget Committee and Deputy Chairperson the Department of Modern Languages at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in 1973, and Convenor for the Communicative and Creative Arts and CCA/Bilingual-Bicultural Studies at SUNY Old Westbury.

In his later life, he pursued a career path through the Suffolk County Department of Social Services. In 1986, he was a caseworker for Child Protective Services and Resource Development. Luis then worked for Residential Care for Adult Protective Services, and progressed to a position as Assistant to Commissioner in 1998. At retirement in 2000, Luis had paved himself a peaceful and fulfilling life, settling down at his residence in North Babylon. He was a devout Catholic, with a passionate personality that will be remembered. Luis is survived by his children, Agnes Phelps (spouse Roger), Theresa Going (spouse Bob), and Louis Leon (spouse Catherine); eight grandchildren, Nicole, Jeffery, Taylor, Robert J., Timothy, Louis, Amber, and Brianna; and two great-grandchildren, William and Nathaniel.
