Obituary
Jason Michael-John Giani of South Setauket, NY died on Christmas Day, 2022 at the young age of 35. Jason valiantly battled Stage 4 Rectal Cancer for over 7 years and never let this disease rob him of his smile.
Spending his childhood in West Islip, NY, Jason was usually found on the pitcher’s mound any day of the week. His love of baseball steered him to Marist College, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Jason worked in the corporate world for just a few years until he was diagnosed.
Jason had a passion for fast cars, Nike SB Dunks, and the UFC. He loved participating in The Hunt exotic car rallies and meeting up with friends and their cars on Sunday mornings. Jason built a sneaker collection that was admired by many. You could regularly hear him talking about Chunky Dunks, Elmos, Baby Bears, Travis Scott’s, and others. He would wear a different pair to chemotherapy treatments every 2 weeks and was so excited to talk about them with anyone who noticed. And everyone noticed. Jason’s bucket list included attending a UFC event, and he was gifted that opportunity twice in the last few months. Those events were his goal to reach each time, and although he was struggling, nothing was keeping him from attending. He was so genuinely grateful for the opportunity to attend and for the kindness shown by all.
Upon Jason’s death, we’ve heard so many stories from others reaching out to let us know how Jason impacted their lives and helped them when they were in need even though he was suffering himself.
.
Jason is survived by his mother Lisa Ohland, stepfathers Erik Ohland and John Drago, grandmother Carol Langstroth, sister Brittany Drago, stepsisters Lindsey Ohland and Ashley Ohland, stepbrothers Andrew Ohland and Conor Ohland, aunt Michelle (Giani) Gambino, nephews Frankie & Vinnie Gambino, uncle George Giani (Trina), cousins Johnathan Giani, Nicki Pipes (Cody), Jacob Giani, and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving family members. He is predeceased by his aunt Caryn Ingraham and grandfather Benjamin Langstroth. Jason also made lasting friendships, building bonds that were as strong as family.
It was Jason’s desire to establish a foundation to help other young adults with cancer. We haven’t set that up yet but will do so in the near future. If you’d like to donate to an established charity, please do so in his name to Dear Jack Foundation (dearjackfoundation.org) or For Pete’s Sake (takeabreakfromcancer.org). Both of these foundations do incredible work and were close to Jason’s heart.
Jason always tried to emphasize the need to listen to your body. If you feel something is “off”, get it checked out. Knowledge is power and the more information you have, the better you are to make informed decisions. If even one life can be saved….

Jason and I lived together at Marist in 07-08. He was a good friend and helped me get acclimated when transferring into a school where for the first few weeks, I lived off campus in temp housing and knew no one. We bonded over Xbox and our mutual obsession of sneakers. He was a good dude and a good person. RIP.

Jason was my student when he was in high school. I could tell back then that he was special. His contagious smile and lively personality lit up my classroom. After graduation, we stayed in contact via text. Jason always stopped by the HS to say hi when he was in the neighborhood. He truly cared about others and this was evident in how he treated anyone he met. Jay shared his diagnosis and subsequent stories of his treatments with me and I was always in awe of his positivity and bravery while fighting this horrible disease. Jason was a huge Jets fan and during one game at MetLife Stadium, we met up and shared some laughs. My life is better because I knew Jason as he gave so much love, joy, and positivity to everyone he met. I will hold his memory in my heart. May God bless your family and help you through this most difficult time.

I've met Jason just one time in 2008 in a visit with the DW crew. He was helpful and friendly and full of light and laughter. Through Lisa's stories, photos and sharing, I have often felt like I knew him and your family so well. What a tremendous loss you have suffered, I cannot imagine these moments. My wish for you is that he continues to live in your hearts and the pain eases a little every day. Celebrate all these wonderful memories everyone is sharing about him. He's made a huge impact on the world around him and continues to through how you choose to honor him. He will forever be remembered by so many of us.
I send your whole family love and hugs and comforting.

Jason n I met through mutual friends. We clicked right off the bat! He always made me laugh n would be my #1 go to for the kicks And the cakes … He’s helped me so many times trying to find the perfect ones. I tried setting him up on a blind date once, that was fun … I’ll miss our conversations, random check ins and mostly his great smile oh and him telling me my truck was dirty Until we meet again my friend.

Jason was a great friend and I will miss him. He was a tremendous fighter but even better person. We lived together at Marist and he was one of the best people I knew. Those memories I will never forget, and will miss my friend. J put in the good word for me and until we meet again my brother.
