Lawrence “Larry” E. Gilrain, of Bethpage, New York was a loving partner, father, grandfather, military veteran, retired officer and friend. He passed away on September 25, 2022 in the hands of his loved ones and we will all continue to honor his legacy of patience, humility, and kindness.
Larry is survived by his partner Lenora Chaimowitz, daughters Kelly Gilrain, Colleen Gilrain Bladel (John), son Timothy Gilrain, and loving grandchildren, Pearle, Jaxson and Lyncoln as well as his siblings, Barbara Swain (Scott), Dennis Gilrain (Arlene), Maureen Natalie (Michael), and step-brothers Daniel Severin (Patricia), James Severin and William Severin (Elizabeth). He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Gilrain and Marie Gilrain, step-mother, Margaret Gilrain and step-brother, Thomas Severin (Patricia). He has left behind many cousins, nieces and nephews. Larry was a friend to everyone he met.
He spent 38 years as a Nassau County Police Officer after serving in the Army during the Vietnam War. Larry loved his job as an officer and was passionate about helping the community of Bethpage. He was especially connected with the crossing guards, who were very much a family to him.
Larry loved sports, was an avid fan of the Mets and had a love - hate relationship with golf. Having 4 holes in one in his lifetime, he consistently won the PBA tournaments and spent many hours on the golf course. Larry had a heart of gold and would go the extra mile for anyone in need. Always volunteering and helping those in a difficult situation. There is no replacement for Larry, he was a genuine and kind man who will be remembered by many.
His wake will be held Sunday October 2, 2022 at Chapey & Sons 20 Hicksville Road Bethpage from 3-7pm. Mass will be held on Monday, October 3, 2022 at St. Martin of Tours, Bethpage NY at 10am with military service to follow at Long Island National Cemetery.

I was a crossing guard in the 8th precinct for over 20 years and that’s where I met Larry. He was one of the most kind and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was always there to lend an ear or a hand through the good times and bad. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I am so sorry to Larry’s family for their loss and you will all be in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Pat Harding

I met Larry in 1984 when I was assigned as a clerk in the 8th Precinct. I have many, many happy and fun memories of great times with him, while working in the summons room, and getting together with co-workers after work. I remember being there for only a few weeks, and Larry called me into the back office, where one of our Officers, Freddie, who was now a quadriplegic in a wheelchair were. Larry proceeded to wheel Freddie into the middle of the room, and pour lighter fluid in a large circle around Freddie in his chair. Larry lit the fluid, and Freddie and Larry began to sing "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash. That was the beginning of a friendship that has lasted for almost 40 years. At Jackie Reilly's or BK Sweeney's, if there was Karaoke, we'd sing "I fought the Law and The Law Won". Larry was one of a kind.........there will never be another like him, and I will miss him terribly.

I met Larry 35 years ago in the Eighth Precinct. I'll always remembered how he mentored me as I was new on the job. He always had a great sense of humor, and he always showed caring and concern for me and the other members of the department that we worked with. He was a great friend and brother officer. Larry will be truly missed by all who knew him. My sincerest condolences to the Gilrain family.
