Obituary
Mitch Lohan died the way he lived; surrounded by friends and family. If we all gathered our thoughts and feelings and collectively chose a word to describe Mitch, that word would be, ‘revered’.
Beloved husband to Diane (nee Vogt), and devoted father to Korrie and Matt, Mitch was enormously proud of his family. In addition to his roles as spouse and parent, Mitch was a loving son, a generous big brother to Mark and Trish, an adored uncle and godfather, a favorite brother-in-law, a respected coach, a beloved mentor, a firefighter, a leader, and example of the kind of man people look up to . . . the person you knew you could count on if ever you needed help.
Above all else, Mitch was a friend to everyone who knew him. It seems cliché to say, but it would be impossible to find someone to speak an unkind word about him. However, if a stranger were to view all the photos through the years, they might come to the conclusion that Mitch was a grumpy curmudgeon who never smiled. Safe to say he didn’t love cameras, but to know him, was to know his smile was genuine and heartfelt and appeared on his face with ease. His blue eyes sparkled and lit up the room. He loved to laugh, and he gave the greatest hugs – of course he did, because he had giant bear paws. He was serious when the situation called for gravity, but loved a good joke and had a fantastic laugh. He had wonderful sense of humor, which he needed as a lifelong Jets fan.
.
Mitch especially loved being a member of the West Islip Fire Department, where he was a member for 38 years. Mitch served as Captain of Mohawk Engine Company from 2009-2011 and again from 2015-2017, and held the office of Commissioner from 2018 until he answered his final alarm. When Mitch wasn’t busy with marching band, the Raiders drill team, and serving his community through firematic service (who are we kidding, Mitch was always doing something at, for, or related to his beloved firehouse and his fire-brethren & sisters).
All joking aside, Mitch was a well-respected, admired, and much-loved member of the community for all his service at the firehouse and on the athletic field. Mitch was a huge country music fan, loved to enjoy an occasional shot of Jack Daniels, and was a patriot through and through; a man who devoted his life to helping and serving others. In good times and bad, Mitch was a steady, reassuring presence.
With all of these qualities, it is easy to see how very much Mitch will be missed. Though this loss is profound for so many, his love, his light, and his spirit will live on in all the lives that he touched.
.
The family is also requesting that you share your stories, your memories, and your photos with them so that we can all celebrate a life well lived. So many reasons to admire our beloved Mitch Lohan. May he rest in peace.
