Linda, Dave, Cynthia and extended family,
I am so sorry for the sadness that you are feeling. Mr. Ortiz was such a good soul. I was very fortunate to grow up a few houses from you and share my childhood with all of you. Mr. Ortiz was the perfect blend of neighbor, adult figure and friend, he balanced those roles as well as anyone I have ever met. He was a great athlete, I remember him playing just about every outdoor sport with us, to video games, to shooting pool in the basement. He would adapt to and try anything that Dave got involved in, including tennis which I’m sure a kid from Brooklyn never imagined playing. Unfortunately, due to circumstances and life itself we have not been together in a while but my fond memories of Arcadia Drive are vivid and due in large part for having your family as neighbors. I know you will miss him dearly, but as you all know his love for you is still there and he lives on in your hearts. You and your Dad will be in my family’s prayers, I’m certain he is very proud of all of you.

Linda - I can’t begin to say how sorry both Bill and I are to hear of Joe’s passing. Yet, we are so thankful to have gotten the chance to see you both just a couple of weeks earlier. We always enjoyed our dinners and drinks together. I am so happy you both got to enjoy your wedding anniversary together at Kyle G’s, and also Joe got his paella and you spent some special time together at Costa de Este. He was a wonderful person - we will miss him dearly.

I have so many memories of Joe where do I begin?! I’ll start with the first day I met him as a PTF. He said to me and another newbie Andrea that his name was Joe Ortiz and we would remember him because he WAS THE BEST LOOKING GUY IN THE PLACE! Totally unexpected, I laughed til by ribs ached! Andrea on the other hand took him dead serious! She thought maybe he was coming on to her(us) I told her “ he’s joking”! The guy is hilarious ! We three laughed for months about that one. I called him” gentleman Joe” in the late 1980’s the economy was really bad and a lot of people out of work. He didn’t want to take tips from anyone who lost their job. Having been on the other side of that fence myself I reminded him that it could hurt someone’s pride to refuse a tip. He never felt comfortable taking that money. I know that he shoveled snow for a widow on the block. How kind is that? I don’t know if you remember Linda, but when I sold my house after 30 years I moved to an apartment in Oakdale. To celebrate not dealing with home ownership I.e., mowing the lawn , repairs etc I celebrated and had you and Joe over to my new place. You said you liked lasagna and that’s what I made. It was me and Bernie, Charlie Butler and Pat. We had such a great time. After dinner we went to Creative Ministries around the corner to see Chorus Line. Your father lived down the block at Ockers. I think. We agreed that we would all do this often and see the plays. But I had to move from there soon after so we never did do it again.
I also remember when it was Joe, Terry Fogarty and Karl Foden working in the same corner near the pass thru window for the window clerks. We laughed so much over things that Myron had to reprimand us b/c we were disrupting window services and customers alike. They finally separated us like pre schoolers! I also remember being included many times at your home for a get together. Thank you!! His last note at Christmas said how happy he was and totally enjoying his grandchildren . They were his life
