37 years, 1 month, and 9 days ago AmatoMusic Co. closed its doors. And today, The Music Man of West Islip is being layed to rest. A family owned business, Amato's Music opened Amato Music on January 14, 1964 and it quickly evolved into a full line musical instrument store and the heart and soul for so many West Islip children. It was Amato's where so many children of school age rented their musical instruments. For some, it was where they first bought their first Elvis 45. Without Amato's Music many of West Islip's musicians would have fallen by the wayside. Jim's smile would light a room and brighten the day of anyone who went into the shop. Amplifiers and sheet music were stacked to the ceiling. Drum sets were always available for test drives. Many people didn't know that Jim played every instrument he sold or rented except one.....the trumpet. However, his passion for music was passed down to both of his sons. Jimmy played the trumpet while Joe played the drums, while Judy tapped her foot to the music. What a musical family. Thank you for providing the beauty of music to the West Islip Community for all the years. And so.....the music has ended, but the melody lingers on.

In 1975 I started to play drums in Bayview elementary school. My 1st drum pad and sticks and book were bought from Amato music. I would go there for drum lessons later and to buy more sticks and look around until I graduated from WIHS in 1983. I still play now actively in an aspiring band situation. Thanks for being there, Eddy (Iplaypearldrums) Wagner
