Obituary
Joseph T. Beck
1963 – 2021
Joseph T. Beck, age 58 of Bethpage, NY, passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2021. A beloved English teacher at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFK) for over 20 years, Joe was in his element in the classroom with students. Besides teaching most courses offered in the English Department, Joe was the editor for the Yearbook, the Fall Drama Director, co-advisor to the school newspaper and loved by his students, their parents, his colleagues and friends.
Joe’s passion for teaching, literature and the power of words went well beyond the classroom. A well-respected author and playwright, Joe was happiest when he was telling a story. And he told many. Joe authored, co-authored and collaborated on several books and wrote hundreds of articles on diverse topics. He wrote and produced plays off-Broadway using his pen to influence others, make them laugh, make them cry and captivate their hearts. Words cannot begin to describe his passion for storytelling. The only thing he loved more than a good story was his wife, children and family.
.
Joe was born on December 27, 1963 in Pensacola, FL. He moved constantly as a military dependent until his parents moved to Long Island in the late 70’s. Joe was a graduate of Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, NY. He earned is BA from SUNY Oneonta and MS degree from CUNY Queens College. His was a long-time resident of Bethpage, NY.
Joe is survived by his wife Gail (Domroe) Beck for 34 years and his adored sons, Andrew Beck of Bethpage, NY, and Ian Beck of Brooklyn, NY. Joe is also survived by his father, Victor Beck and his wife Theresa of Kings Park, NY, his sister Judi (Beck) Kelly and her husband John of Windham, NH, his brother Vic Beck and wife Debby (Silverberg) Beck of Sudbury, MA, his brother Jim Beck and his wife Karen (Seho) Beck of Huntington Station, NY, and his sister Jane (Beck) Griffin of Portsmouth, VA. Joe’s nieces and nephews Adam, Alex, Bryan, Josh, Lindsay, Michelle, Olivia, Rachel, Sabrina and Sean were often his favorite audience for his stories, jokes and puns.
He is predeceased by his mother Ella (Norton) Beck and his brother Edward V. Beck.

Mr. Beck was my teacher for two years. He was such a wonderful man. He was quirky, funny, compassionate, and was always there whenever we needed him. I had him over the 2020 Quarantine and I remember he would always crack some jokes and try his best to do whatever he could do to help us. As a senior now, he was always much more than a teacher. He was like a friend and made each of his students feel special in their own light. He encouraged us and always started the day off happy. Between his jokes, his passion for writing, and his love for his morning coffee, he always made our day. He would inspire us to be our best selves and really impacted us in such a way that he made English class fun. I will deeply miss you Mr. Beck. You were such a fantastic teacher.

Joe was always so kind, warm, and funny. I am so glad that I got to know Joe for the short time I did while teaching at POBJFK last year. I went to POBJFK myself as a student a decade or so ago. I remember whenever he would teach Shakespeare, I would see him walking in the hallways between classes decked out in the garb of that time period. He laughed when I told him I remembered him doing that. If he was able to put a smile on my face as both a student and a colleague, then I can only imagine the many other people he's left a positive impact on. He will truly be missed. My thoughts are with him & his family.

GAIL. Andrew, & Ian.
Your dad brought joy to a lot of people- especially you guy's and your Mom. When i saw him we had great conversations about different subjects but you knew he loved the theatre as you do Andrew. . I loved listening about the famous actors- and not so famous he met- and worked with.
Andrew and Ian, Your dad gave a lot to a lot of people- that speaks volumes- as does- his Love for you guy's and your Mom.

Mr. Beck was one of my favorite teachers I have had in my school career and I am now a senior in college. I had the pleasure of having Mr. Beck for two years of high school. His kind energy and charisma could put a smile on your face like no one else could. Everyone was excited to go to his class because he actually made it enjoyable to be there. I ended up studying in Oneonta and I would often see him at a deli near JFK. He told me I would love Oneonta and a quote he told me multiple times, “I got all I need from Oneonta, my degree and my wife.”The world may have lost a great man, but Heaven gained an amazing angel. Rest in peace to an amazing man and teacher.

I wish Joe was here at my shoulder to help me find the right words. Maybe they simply don't exist. Joe was many things to me, a colleague, a confidante, a shoulder to lean on and most of all; a friend. But that's not how he would describe himself. When everything is distilled down and all the dross is stripped away, Joe was a family man. He loved his wife and sons beyond measure and that love was expressed in countless ways.
I'll miss his kindness. I'll miss his passion. I'll miss his fearlessness. I'll miss thoughtfulness.
From this day to my last, I'll miss my friend.

KINDRED SPIRIT
My cousin Joe "I have questions" Beck and I are more than family -- we are kindred spirits... Neither a lack of minutes nor a length of miles mattered as we could pick up a conversation months apart with him in New York and me in Florida and it would be as if we had just talked earlier that day.
Both English teachers, both writers -- albeit his skills superior to mine in both regards; I was, however, definitely the funnier one...
Whether he was visiting me in Florida, or I was up in Long Island, we always fell instep; and people could always tell we were family... Especially when we would eerily finish each other's jokes.
Though I will extremely miss seeing him and our relentless banter, I will not miss his spirit for it will be with me forever.
My deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to Gail, Andrew, and Ian; Uncle Vic, Judi, Vic, Jimmy, and Janey.
Andrew -- we will have that evening of storytelling and moment sharing this summer, guaranteed.
To my cousin Joe -- once and forever mayor of our fictional town of Norbeck!!! I love you...

Mr Beck was a delight. One of my most memorable teachers, despite only having him for half the year due to COVID. We read the Halloween tree, and he always motioned to the tree in the courtyard that we could see through the window. When the school cut down the tree, he wrote them about it and his disappointment! For Animal Farm, he made voices for all the characters! He had the ‘Beck Special’, where he’d buy chips from the school store and give them to us when we watched films. Another memory was him bringing in a bag of apples, and he gave them to us if we answered questions correctly! A very eccentric teacher who was the topic of many conversations at the table. He will be missed greatly.

Mr. Beck was one of the kindest and most influential teachers that I’ve had throughout my academic curriculum. He would always greet us with a smile at the door when walking into class; which no matter how my day was going would always get me feeling a little bit better. Though it has been more than 5 years since taking his class, I will never forget reading Macbeth as well as Suburban Sins and Animal Farm and enjoying every minute of them. Mr. Beck was also very understanding. On days he could see the class was not as into it, he would provide a much needed day off or give us a spontaneous bagel or pizza day. Mr. Beck was not only a great teacher, but also a role model to many of us. He showed us what true passion looked like. The coolest thing about Mr. Beck though, was the way he would drive home from school on his motorcycle with his hair flapping in the wind. To this day, I still use his lessons that are now embedded in my mind. When my brother told me he had Mr. Beck for English this year I knew he was in for a special class, as it is like no other. I know that him and I, as well as the rest of our family, will hold him dear in our thoughts. - Max Braccia and Family

Mr Beck was my teacher and in class he would try to make a few corny jokes to try and make us all laugh. I read the Great Gatsby in his class and Catcher in the Rye. He was a great teacher that made me become a better writer. With his explanations about characters in the stories he gave me a better view about the stories he read in class

This is hard for me to say, but my brother Joseph Beck passed away unexpectedly on December 28th at the age of 58 just one day after celebrating his birthday (way to early) He was a man of integrity, honor, had a zest for life, and had a great sense of humor. He was such a comedian. Whenever my older brother Ed (who passed in 2020), and Joe would get together be prepared to laugh your asses off. Hell for all I know there creating such a ruckus up there with there antics,, and jokes. My brother lived life to the fullest, and never took anything forgranted. My brother Joe wasn't just an ordinary man. He was a loving husband to his wife, an amazing father to his children, a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, but most of all he was a great friend to many people. He will be truly missed beyond words or measure. My heart goes out to his wife (Gail) his children (Andrew, and Ian) My father (Vic Beck Sr), and my other siblings as well (Judi, Vic Beck Jr, and James Beck). My nephew Andrew was dead on when he said tell your loved one's you love, and appreciate them, because you never know when It will be over.....
