Joan was like a big sister to me. I knew her for years and years. I believe her mother worked at Southside hospital with my father Dr. Harry McGrath, Ophthalmologist. She was the perfect friend who helped me on many occasions during my life. For example, for the past 20 years I have been coordinating a pioneering medical training and observation study program for groups of doctors and head nurses from Viet Duc University Hospital, Hanoi, Viet Nam. Thanks to Joan's advise and medical expertise our guests from Viet Nam had a very successful and enjoyable experience training in several of our medical facilities here on Long Island and in New York City. Through her assistance and hospitality, she helped establish a wonderful relationship between the U.S. and its former adversary. She really was special.
