Obituary
John Joseph Garvey of Farmingdale was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 8, 2021 surrounded by his loving family at home. He was born on December 4, 1926 in Manhattan to the late Dr. Thomas V. and Helen Rowley Garvey. He married the love of his life, Eileen A. Meany, on October 16, 1948 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Bayside, Queens. Devoted father of John Jr. (Cheryl), Ellen Anderson (John), Kevin (Kathleen), Regina, Edward (Beth Ann), Patricia, and Thomas (Michelle). Cherished grandfather of Travis, Ryan, Meghan, Kathleen, John, Caitlin, Alison, Erin, Keriann, Sean, Megan, Matthew, Dylan, Jack, and 13 great-grandchildren. Beloved brother of Donnell J. Kelly and the late Margaret Purcell, Thomas Garvey, Anne Sanchez, Dr. Donald Garvey, and Helen Garvey.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After an honorable discharge, he became a proud member of Steamfitters Local 638 where he worked for over 50 years. He was an avid golfer and gardener, but nothing brought him more joy than to spend time with grandchildren at his family home in Mattituck.
A mass of Christian burial will be offered on Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 11:30AM at St. James Church in Seaford, NY. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Charles Cemetery. Dear Aunt Eileen and Family -
My heartfelt condolences on the loss of our dear Uncle John. I'm too young to remember the days when our families rubbed shoulders in Farmingdale, but I still have bright memories of summer visits, cook-outs, and reunions. Uncle John was a patriarch of a great family and the rock of an extended clan; he was warm, funny, generous, undeceived and unforgettable. He was also the last of six remarkable siblings who were loved and admired by all they met. His life was a long and full one, and I'm sure I speak for my brother and sisters when I say that we will all remember him with the greatest fondness until that day when we are at last reunited.
With love and sympathy,
Cousin Tommy of the Texas Garveys

Dear Aunt Eileen and Cousins,
The world seems a bit less bright with the passing of Uncle John. I have such warm childhood memories from the years our families lived just around the block from each other. Ellen and I thought we had gotten away with it, but I'm sure Uncle John knew we had raided his secret stash of chocolate! When we traveled back from Texas for summer visits, we could always count on a great family cookout in Aunt Eileen's and Uncle John's backyard. In their later years, Uncle John and our father Tom sometimes shared photos of their vegetable gardens, each convinced his crop was bigger and better than his brother's. I know that all of us in the Garvey clan have many fond memories of Uncle John, and I hope that sharing your own memories and stories will provide some comfort at this time.
Love to you all,
"Cousin Cathy"

Dear Aunt Eileen and Family,
Please accept our deepest sympathy on the passing of your husband and father. Our Uncle John was long adored by the Texas Garvey clan, all through the years since moving away in 1963. The time and distance hardly mattered though and all the happy memories with Grandma and Grandpa, crabbing with all the cousins at Mattituck, swimming at your house in Farmingdale, have come flooding back. And now he is reunited at the heavenly table with his parents, brothers and sisters, with God, in eternal joy.
We mourn his loss because it marks a poignant moment in our lives. However, what a beautiful and blessed life he had! For this, we give thanks.
Thinking of you all and sending love and prayers across the miles
Helen Marie, Bill and Family

Deepest condolences and sympathies on the passing of your dear Father, a kind-hearted and generous lion of a great American family..
Uncle John Garvey was always very kind to the Purcell Family kids, always willing to play with us in the Garvey living room, and elsewhere. Those are fun, loving memories we will always cherish.
