In Loving Memory
On March 14, 2021, our beloved father, Donal N. Morrissey, passed away. It is very difficult to gather the right words in order to encapsulate the type of person Dad was. Dad meant so much to each of his children and to his extended family in different ways; I know he meant so much to all of you as well. He was kind, compassionate, extremely smart and well-studied. He was generous and always interested in learning about the person standing before him or sitting beside him. He has touched the lives of many people in various ways. He selflessly gave so much of himself to others. He had great affection for his father’s homeland and worked diligently at maintaining the U.S. and Ireland connection. Dad was deeply devoted to his religion, Catholicism. He was an educator, teaching for 33 years in the New York City Public School system. He was proud to be a bagpiper. Simply, he was a very proud man. Some are graciously referring to Dad as a legend. Our family is in complete agreement that Dad was a legend. We are heartbroken. This world lost one hell of a gentleman. The only thing that brings some tranquility and resolve to us is knowing that he has reunited with the love of his life, his beloved bride and our mother. Dad is survived by his five children: Donal (Sandi), Kevin (Mary), Lorraine, Niall, and June (Mark) Spruyt; and his nine grandchildren Kevin, Donal Jr., Brianna, Kyle, Kaitlyn, Justin, Ryan, Hope and Austin.

Mr. Morrissey was my teacher at I.S. 237 many moons ago...he was in fact my favorite teacher both sharing a Celtic background. When we left N.Y. and moved to AZ we kept in touch over the years and Mr. Morrissey even came to a few family functions when we would go back to visit. When I moved to Georgia we lost touch but I always received a beautiful Christmas card. Mr. Morrissey popped into my head today and I can't explain how deeply saddened I was to see this when I looked him up. He was an amazing teacher a beautiful human being and I am forever grateful to have had him in my life. I am so sorry for the families loss, I know his family was his pride and joy.

My father, myself, and my brother all served with Donal in the Army National Guard. He was the consummate gentleman even back then in the turbulent 1960s. I just noticed the star next to his name in our Veterans bulletin member list denoting his passing. My father was thrilled with Donal more than any other soldier in our regiment. I can visualize Donal today just as he was back then and I still am in awe of his everyday demeanor. Surely he rests in the everlasting arms of Jesus. ROBERT McKENNA

Rest in peace Donal.
A true Hibernian, and a valued member of Saint Patrick’s Division 2 of the AHO, in Babylon New York.
When I joined the Saffron Kilts many years ago, Donal welcomed me to one of the finest Pipe Bands in the North East. So many stories and good times.
