"FÁGANN AN BÁS BÁS AN DUINE NACH FÉIDIR LE DUINE A LEIGHEAS; FÁGANN GRÁ LE CUIMHNE NACH FÉIDIR LE DUINE É A GHOID."
For 76 years I could count on my big brother to provide me with his example of honesty, integrity, loyalty, friendship and moral leadership. I cannot do that any longer but I can retain memories of the exemplary life that he lived to the fullest.
My big brother was kind and caring to our parents and to our sisters. He worked hard at his academic and athletic pursuits at St. Joseph’s in Princeton and at his ‘basic training’ at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. He was an accomplished track athlete and one helluva Marine.
My big brother was tenacious and when he set his mind to accomplish a goal, he did it! Dan was a consummate ‘handyman’ and could fix almost anything. He was also a master woodworking craftsman and he created many a lawn game and many more of decorative wooden statues and unique handicrafts for his family and for those whom he loved unconditionally. He was certainly a talented carpenter!
My big brother was always fearless and courageous. I remember the time he jumped into Mill Basin, saved me from drowning and then swam back to the boat with me in tow to continue his beloved fishing efforts. Those Sheepshead Bay overnight Friday fishing expeditions for “blues” are priceless memories for me.
My big brother was a man of great faith and he faced his final days with the fortitude of a proud Leatherneck. I only wish I was allowed to spend more time with him as he endured the pain and suffering of his final illness. I am confident that when he arrives at his eternal home he will recite that old Gyrene slogan that goes like this: And when he gets to heaven, St. Peter he will tell, one more Marine reporting sir, I've served my time in hell.
