My deepest condolences to the Byrne family. I was a classmate of Larry's at NYU law school. We became friends after the first year when he did me a kindness by suggesting I apply, as he was doing, for an internship with one of the federal judges in the SDNY. Over the years we would catch up with each other on career and family from time to time. We laughed a lot about the good, the bad and the ugly in our lives. One time I called him to check in and he tells me, "Everything is fine except I don't have a job or a house." After I gasp, he explains that his law practice is moving to a new firm and his house which was under renovation caught fire but his family is safe and they have a place to stay. Larry was so very proud of his boys. I remember visiting Larry at home in Pelham, NY right after his first son was born; he was such a happy but very tired new father. I recall us talking a lot about Chris when he was attending Manhattan College where my husband works. Pat, Chris and Pete were always a part of our conversations. This last month I was happy to hear from Larry that Pat and Chris were home with him. I have included a picture taken when we graduated from law school. It was taken in the law library--from left to right in the foreground are: Tillie Lim (a classmate and friend), Larry, me, and Terry Carrera (a friend of mine).

My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. I was grateful to have met him this past summer while I was working in Montauk. Last time we communicated he was in Hilton Head, SC. I didn't found out until today when I saw it on facebook and then realized why he never replied back to my texts since he always would. Prayers to everyone who knew him and is affected by this tragedy of one who was taken way too soon.

30 some odd years ago I was guarding a federal jury for Judge Kram at night. A young law clerk came and made sure I had gotten a meal. In all my years that had never happened before. That Law Clerk was you son, brother and father. It made such an impression on me that in all these years I never forgot it. Larry was a class individual.

My good friend Larry Byrne was Groomsman at my wedding to Julie Vianale on October 19, 991 in Cambridge, Maryland. This photo and others taken that day show a happy and carefree Larry. He was a good friend. We shared a lot together when we were still young(!) -- at the U.S. Attorney's Office (1988 and following), after work at Stark's Restaurant on Broadway, at The Queen on Court Street, at Spaghetti Western on Chambers Street, and at the MIC (in the middle of nowhere as I remember). I'm grateful to have known Larry and his family. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. -Kenneth Vianale

Dear family of Larry Byrne,
I wrote a note to Chris, with whom I have been in touch recently, but I wanted to tell you all how deeply sorry I am over the tragic and profound loss of Larry. Larry was my professional mentor and a dear friend since the late 1990s. He was enormously helpful to my career as a lawyer. He was someone I always looked up to, someone whose counsel I would seek and it was always correct, and someone with such a depth of generosity. He was one of the true greats, and you all were especially blessed to have him as father/son/brother, etc.
My prayers are with you all. May his memory live on and give you some comfort in the months and years ahead.
Jonathan Abernethy (Gibson Dunn 1997-98; Squadron Ellenoff 1998-2001, inspired by Larry's move there; US Attorney's Office, SDNY, 2001-08, inspired by Larry's prior service and helped immensely by his letter of recommendation; friend and colleague ever since I've been blessed to know him)

Larry was an extraordinary person who stood out for his deep commitment to his family, his friends and his values. I will greatly miss Larry's piercing intellect and vigorous embrace of life. Over the many years of our friendship, he was always available to support or to share a laugh -- and when able, enjoy some good food and fine wine. I pray that the profound impact Larry had on those who knew him, on the NYPD, and the lives of our Nation's police community, will bring comfort to his family and all of those who loved him and feel such intense loss at this time.

From the moment I met him almost 40 years ago, Larry was always larger than life. He was a dear dear friend who was fiercely loyal to his principles, his friends, the NYPD, and his family. Larry always seemed to know what he wanted out of life and he strove to achieve those things with grace, humor, dignity, and a firm sense of self. Larry knew where he was going, but more importantly, he knew where he came from and he was true to both places. While I am grieving like so many others, I take some comfort in so many wonderful memories and the mark that Larry Byrne made in this world. Larry will stay with so many of us because, truly, Larry was larger than life. May his memory be for a blessing to his family and friends.

There was no greater friend than Larry, and no greater leader among friends. I know that long from now, when faced with a difficult decision, I will ask myself -- what would Larry say that I should do.
He will be deeply missed, but his memory will always brighten our lives. Our most sincere condolences. Let me know if there ever is anything we can do for you.

Larry was a most rare talent. An unsurpassed intellectual talent while very down to earth. He devoted his life to family and the law with a singular focus upon making the world a better place. Larry gave, experienced, and accomplished so much in his 61 years, more than most can in a full life of 90 years or more. Deep condolences to all his friends, colleagues and, especially, family Friends always, Steven LoCascio

To the Byrne Family,
We keep you and your loved ones in our hearts during this difficult time. Larry embodied all the things that made public service great -- dedication, kindness, values, a sense of community and the desire to help New York City.
We know that tradition runs deeply in your family. The sacrifices you've endured remind us what good people there are in the world.
Larry worked with me often while I handled communications at the New York City Law Department. We'd grab a bite sometimes and discuss the latest issues. Throughout my office, everyone valued Larry's inspiration, desire to help and esprit de corps.
We hope that his memories keep you warm -- and help you to remember him with a smile in these difficult times.
Best Regards,
Kate Ahlers & Family

It grieves me deeply to say goodbye (for now) to such an extraordinary friend. For many of the lawyers who worked with him, as I had the honor to do for many years, Larry was an uncommon man--loyal, demanding, lucid and uncompromising. He taught us how to be exceptional lawyers and faithful friends. He showed us how we might slow down to walk at our own professional and personal pace and how we might learn to cherish the nobility of our profession. His death is a loud loss to those of us who owe him so very much. May God rest his soul.
