Obituary

Louise M. Carlstrom (nee Lieberman) passed away at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson, NY on October 24, 2020 after a long battle with emphysema. She considered herself very blessed to have lived for over 85 years and lived every day of these last few years thankful for the time she had to spend with her loved ones.    Louise was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and was the youngest of the three children of the late Richard, Sr. and the late Henrietta (Kramer) Lieberman. Her brothers Richard, Jr. and John also predeceased her.    Louise was married for 47 years to the late Donald Carlstrom with whom she had three children: Paul, Linda and the late Donna Louise who died in infancy. Louise and her family eventually moved to North Massapequa, NY. After Donald’s passing, she moved to Centereach, NY to be closer to her daughter Linda’s family. In the last 5 years she lived with, and was cared for by, Linda and her family. Her positive attitude, faith in her God, and love of family carried her through in these last difficult years; although to her she was always “fine”.   During her lifetime, Louise had worked briefly as a switchboard operator in the Empire State Building until she became a mother. Louise’s love of children would shape her life after that as a stay-at-home mom who opened her home and provided childcare to many children that she loved as her own.  She had a very special bond with all of them. Sasha however, became another daughter to her and Louise a second mother to Sasha.

.

Louise had a loving relationship with Linda’s husband Michael and Paul’s wife Elaine. She was a proud and loving grandmother of four granddaughters Rebecca, Amanda, Samantha and Ashley. She was never happier than when she was spending time with her girls. She was overjoyed to welcome Anthony as her “grandson” when he married Rebecca. Louise was ecstatic to be blessed to have two great-grandsons, Leonardo and Lucca. She loved spending time with her family and had many close relationships with her nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as cherished friends who became “family”. Family was everything to Louise. Family gatherings such as holidays and “Cousin’s Christmas” parties were sources of great joy for her. Louise was honored to have had seven godchildren and remained an important part of each of their lives.   After Donald retired, he and Louise enjoyed taking cruises to many places and spending time with their granddaughters. In later years, Louise loved to take family vacations with Linda and her family. She especially loved going on cruises which she did with Michael and Linda. She was thrilled to have cruised to Bermuda with Samantha and Ashley.

.

Louise was dedicated to her church serving as the head of the Altar Guild at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church for many years.   Anyone who knew Louise will remember her warmth and love of people. She loved to talk to people and get to know them. She had a great capacity for love that all of those around her surely felt. Louise had great faith in her Lord which was a gift that she shared with all of us. In lieu of flowers, Louise’s family would like donations to be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital @www.stjude.org. Other memorial options include St. Peter’s Lutheran Church 105 Highland Drive Brooklyn, NY 11208 and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church 2025 Washington Avenue Seaford NY 11783.
