Obituary
Johansen, Justin Mark, beloved father, husband, son, brother, Marine. Justin died suddenly of a heart attack on October 21, 2020 after going for a run. Born March 15, 1980 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Justin grew up in and graduated from Lindenhurst, NY, where he developed a love for the water and played lacrosse. After graduating from Bucknell University, Justin was commissioned in the Marine Corps as an artillery officer in July 2002. While on active duty from 2002 – 2008, Justin did three deployments, including two to Iraq and one on ship as part of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). He continued in the Marine Corps reserves and deployed again in 2009/2010 to Afghanistan. At the time of his death he was a Lieutenant Colonel and Commanding Officer of 3rd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO). To those who served with him, Justin was looked up to as a mentor, respected as a leader, and loved as a humble hero. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, (3) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals (two with Combat V), (3) Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals (one with Combat V), and a Combat Action Ribbon. Justin earned is Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Southern California in 2013 and, starting in 2015, was a Senior Project Manager at Trane Technologies until the time of his death. Justin was known for being a tall, quiet, presence who could always be relied on and who told dorky jokes that were usually only funny to him (but you would laugh because he laughed). He was a dedicated and loving husband to his wife of 15 years’, Nicole, and an amazing father to his children Lia (6) and Gunnar (6).
.
Justin loved surfing with his dad and friends, spending time with his family, Star Wars, vegemite, traveling, and the mountains of Vermont. In his spare time, he was passionate about researching whiskeys, guns, and ways to cook (which resulted in chef quality crepes, steaks, omelets, and eggs benedict). In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by his mother Lynne, father Mark, and sister Meaghan.Services will be held at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip, NY on Sunday October 25th from 1-5pm EST. Ceremony and military honors will take place at approximately 3:30pm EST and will be live streamed for those you cannot attend by going to https://chapeyfamily.com/ and clicking on the link for Justin.

It was my great pleasure getting to know Justin during his transition to Commanding Officer of 3d ANGLICO. Even though our time together was fairly short, I could not have imagined handing the Command over to a more capable and caring successor. It was a true pleasure getting to know him, finding out about his deep experience, and learning his thoughts on where he was going to take the unit. He also spoke at length about his wonderful family, recounting travel experiences and life during the pandemic. During the Change of Command, his primary concern was ensuring that his family could watch the ceremony remotely. It was an honor serving with Justin, and I wish all those he loved all the very best during this difficult time — God bless all of you!

To the Johansen family, my deepest condolences for the loss of Justin. I had the privilege to serve directly under his leadership during our deployment to Afghanistan. Justin was such a brave man, professional at his job, but most of all, he took good care of his marines. Thank you for letting us spend time with him, it was such a great honor.
Justin Johansen sir, thank you for believing in me when I didn't believe in myself. Taking a risk to bring me aboard your team meant so much to me, still does til this day. You could've easily replaced me for someone much more competent, but you chose to stick with me the whole way. I still have one portion of my separation papers for one reason, the character statements you made of me. It means a lot to me coming from you. I will never forget you sir.

To Nicole and the Johansen family our thoughts are with you at this time. We only have the most profound memories for the tall young boy that became such a beautiful young man right in front of our eyes. Strong but caring, tough when needed to be, rugged, determined and above all loyal at all times to family and friends. We will always be grateful to Justin and then Nicole when she came into Steve's life for all they did to be true friends.
We will will miss Justin in so many ways and join so many today who grapple with Justins passing. We try to rationalize what cannot be rationalized.
We are so sorry and can only send our love with the prayers we recite for your family.
With our deepest sympathy and sincere love,

Justin was the epitome of what it means to be a good man and a good Marine. He was a friend, mentor, and true leader. I count myself fortunate to be one of the hundreds of Marines he impacted during his far too short time with us. 4th ANGLICO, the Marine Corps, and the world are all better places for his service and devotion to his fellow man. You'll be dearly missed Sir.

I am so saddened by the loss of Justin, such a fine son, father, husband and soldier. His was a short life filled with wonderful things. i extend my sympathy to Mark and Lynn, Meagan, Nicole and the little ones, all those who knew and loved him. i too have had a personal loss of my son David Sverni, suddenly at the age of 52, on June, 9, 2020. All i can think is that heaven needs some strong angels this year. My hope is that they will meet in heaven, they did not get a chance to meet here on earth. I am so sorry. I’m trying to overcome shock and disbelief so that I can move on to the next stage of grieving. Justin was my very first friend and we have a childhood of wonderful memories together that I am so grateful for. He was the bravest, most intelligent and humble person I’ve ever known and I deeply admired and looked up to him my entire life. He always pushed me out of my comfort zone. Whether it was paddling out to surf too close to the rocks on the beaches of Long Island, convincing me to ride on the back of a moped with him to a biker bar during bike week and backing up traffic or challenging me to an eating contest. He was incredibly funny and he is leaving an absolutely enormous missing piece that can’t be replaced in our small family. He meant the world to my Aunt and Uncle, his sister, his wife, his children and other family members, friends and fellow Marines. Reading the messages on his memory wall has torn me up. I knew he was an honorable man but I had no idea how many lives he’d saved during his years of service. I’m so proud to be his cousin. Rest In Peace Justin.

I am at a loss for words. Justin was a Team Leader when we deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. He was the most humble man I think I have ever met. After I got out of the Marine Corps in 2010 I had the privilege of working with Justin on almost a daily basis at Camp Pendleton since we were both civilian contractors there. He went out of his way to make sure that I was always taken care of and always in good spirits since I was injured in Afghanistan. Prior to me leaving that position, I asked him why. He didn’t have to do that since I was no longer in the Corps. He simply said “you’re still one of us, which means I will always look out for you”. Thank you Justin for all the time I got to share with you both in the corps and out of it. My heart goes out to your family and friends. You will be missed. Until we meet again sir, Semper Fi!

People ask who my heroes are and I always say that they are many of the people I serve with daily.
LtCol Justin Johansen is one of those heroes. I have had the honor of watching this man lead, fight, and save Marines in some of the fiercest combat in Afghanistan. I have also had the pleasure and luck of serving with him in two separate units. No matter the situation, Justin routinely exemplified what a leader should be: calm, collected, and humble. He always listened to his men and made sure to always put them and the mission far above himself.
LtCol Johansen's passing has left our family shocked and heartbroken. He was a great friend, mentor and leader. I trusted Justin's leadership and guidance as he always made sure you had his undivided attention when you needed his help.
You are my hero Justin and I will never forget the impact you have made on me professionally and personally. I am here today because of you. I will see you again brother; Semper Fidelis!
