Obituary
Donna Theresa Ryan, long time Babylon Village resident died August 20th, 2020 in New York City. A loving wife, devoted mother of 5, and Grammy of 12, Donna is survived by her children, John F. Ryan (Constance) of Brooklyn, NY; Kathleen J. Ryan (Maxwell) of New York, NY; Timothy V. Ryan (Tina) of Sydney, Australia; Michael E. Ryan (Regina) of Brooklyn, NY; her grandchildren; Sarah, Amelia, Liza, Luke, Sophie, Aidan, Lucie, Lachlan, Vincent, Mia, Anna, and Etta; and proceeded by her husband of 59 years Vincent J. Ryan, and son Matthew J. Ryan (Nona) of Goshen, NY.
Born Donna Theresa Rummel on September 5, 1929 in Chicago, Il; the youngest child of Harry and Kathleen Rummel’s (nee McManaman) three children, and their only daughter. Donna lost her father when she was only 3, and was raised by her mother, Kay, a single-mother, and independent business owner- a rarity in the 1930s, with the help of many loving relatives both in Hawarden, and nearby Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Donna moved to New York City after graduating High School, taking a job with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Not long after, Donna met her late husband, Vincent J. Ryan, a young attorney. They were married on June 28th, 1952 at Corpus Christi Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa. After a post nuptial holiday in Duluth, the young Mr. and Mrs. Ryan returned to NYC to start a family, eventually settling in Vincent’s childhood home of Babylon, NY.
.
Raising their family in Babylon Village, on Oak Street, and later Trask Lane, Donna was active in the community, at Babylon village schools when her children were young, and later with the local election board. An active member of Saint Joseph’s Church for over 60 years, an avid gardener, and an enthusiastic tennis player, Donna could often be found in her yard or on the local court when not driving as a volunteer for F.I.S.H., volunteering with the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital, or working at the Good Samaritan Thrift Shop.
Sharp as a tack, Donna’s wit is legendary, along with the kindness she showed to others. Revered by her children, and grandchildren whom she adored, Donna will live on in those who were lucky enough to know her.
A private visitation will be held 8:30 am - 10:00 am Thursday, August 27, 2020 for family at Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip, NY. Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial, Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 10:30 am St. Joseph's RC Church, Babylon, LI. Interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Babylon, LI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Donna’s name to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation (https://goodsamaritan.chsli.org/how-give-good-samaritan-hospital-foundation).

My early memories of Aunt Donna were visiting her with my mom on Oak Street, or she would visit us on Paumanake Avenue. She would always greet me by saying "hello Patricia", using my full name which people rarely did. Commonly I was called Patti. So that always struck me, in a good way.
I remember being amazed at homemade ice cream being made on the back steps at Oak St., that one could actually make ice cream. Other memories include numberous trips to the beach, summers at the Babylon Yacht Club and general good times Donna and Vinnie shared with my parents Catherine and Tom.
She was a good friend to Mom and and I realize now how relatively young they were when they first met, and how wonderful that their friendship endured over the decades! Donna was another of the Greatest Generation who will be missed in many ways.

Dear Ryan Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Donna's passing especially during this time when she couldn't have you all close by...I know it is difficult for all of you.
I remember Donna for our many trips to the beach together (did we seriously sit on Canadian wool blankets and drag a wooden playpen along?!) and for the many times she sat in our kitchen having coffee and laughing -our mom was not always a happy person but Donna brought out the best in her.
Though it is not so much the custom anymore there was a time when no matter how old the "younger" person was you could not address an older person without a title such as Mr. ,Mrs., etc... so it was a very big deal to me when I walked into our kitchen one day and said "Hi, Mrs. Ryan" and her response, with a laugh, was "Oh ,Kathy...just call me Donna." It may seem like a little thing but it made my day and is something I still fondly remember about her.
I hope this finds you all as well as can be expected.
If you are ever down Nashville-way I hope you will let me know so we can go out for drinks and have a toast to your mom--and Vinnie too !
With love and memories,
Kathy and Duke

Aunt Donna was a wonderful, kind person. I appreciate her decades old friendship with my Mother and my memories of being packed up in the station wagon and going to the beach. Aunt Donna watched me as a child while my Mother was at work and for that I will always be grateful. Yes, I was intimidated by their dog Barnaby?Barnabus I forget, but it was nice to have somewhere to go. My Mother told me that she and Donna let me swim in the cooler when we took one of Donna's children off to college at Buffalo (? ) back in the 70's. Although I don't remember, I am glad I was part of that roadtrip and that Donna was part of my life. Best of memories to the Ryan clan.
