while getting ready to leave mr loviglio’s class in middle school one day, i pulled a CD, The Joshua Tree, out on of my bag. mr loviglio spotted it & flew thru the outflowing shuffle of kids like a hawk. he picked it up off my desk and held it out like ... i dunno, like he was loftin’ the globus cruciger, something invested w/ latent power, and with this uncharacteristic manner (well, from my limited perspective as his student, anyway) / in some sorta exuberent-and-reverent-at-once quantum state voice, he said, “one of the greatest records ever made.” declaration complete, he handed it to me as if it were something he were givin’ to me ... even tho it was already mine. seemed weird & confusing then, but at 40 of course i recognize the gesture. and i can guess the mystery-loviglio in superposition fer a second there was some younger self who i didn’t otherwise encounter in unmediated form. i remembered this single moment out of nowhere earlier & it made me look up his name on a whim, hence landing on this page and learning that he’s gone. i was just a regular ol’ student, not one he’d have had a reason to remember or anything — but i figured why not share that recollection here in case somebody out there missin’ him might be comforted by the thought of how innumerable far flung strangers who happened to pass thru his classroom as kids must all have a fragment or two like that one floatin’ around in their skulls however many decades on. teachers have special reach.

Thank you, Darien. I also just found out about Mr. Loviglio’s passing. He was one of my favorite teachers in high school, 20-something years before your middle school days. I thought of him today on the birthday of one of our mutual friends, also a teacher, who has been gone 10+ years. I was ready to contact him on Classmates.com where I had last communicated with him 7 years ago. Something told me to google him first. I’m very saddened to learn of his passing. RIP Mr. Loviglio…and Mr. Ober xo

Husband, father, sibling, teacher, coach, teammate, friend. All offered in the same generous way: with honesty, compassion, humor, wisdom and integrity. Anyone who knew Jim was better for the relationship and the joyous smile. While we have lost a pillar of our foundation, we are so very fortunate to have known & loved him.
