Obituary
GRELLO-Dr. Fred William Grello passed away peacefully at his beloved home on April 4, at age 89. Husband of 62 years to Rose Theresa DiPalma, he was the proud father of six children. Fred, Jr. (Catherine), Margaret Rose (Michael), Frank (Laura), Ciro (Christine), Monica Rose, and Stephen (Jennifer). He was beloved by his 20 grandchildren and 2 great-grand-children and took pride in remembering all their names and birthdates. William, Monica, Christina, Alexandra, Matthew, Stephen, Jessica, Douglas, Samuel, Rosanna, Eva, Isabella, Dominique, Cassandra, Ciro, James, Daniel, Julia, Mia, Ava, Noah and Preston! As the sole survivor of 7 children, he became a cherished uncle to scores of nieces and nephews. His childhood years were spent in Southern Maryland, and he attended Georgetown University undergrad and Medical School. He served 8 years in the Navy, spending a life-changing year in Haiti, and worked in Bethesda Naval Hospital during his residency. He moved to Long Island in 1962, shortly thereafter finding his home in Brightwaters in 1964. He established his pediatrics practice in West Islip where he spent 40+ years tending to the needs of his ever-expanding flock of loyal patients. He was known for his keen diagnostic skills, detecting rare and often life-threatening illness and conditions in their earliest stages. He remained active in the Parish of St. Patrick, serving as a weekly lector and eventually a Ministry of Consolation. He took up cooking in his later years and reveled in hosting dinner parties for which he prepared his favorite Italian specialties. His love for gardening in his yard and around the Brightwaters Lakes became the stuff of local legend. He took immense pride in his home, built in 1885, and rolled on logs to its current location in the early 1900s.
.
He will be interred in a private religious ceremony led by Father Cyril Obi on 4/14/2020 at St. Charles Cemetery. We intend to memorialize Dr. Grello in early October at Chapey & Sons Funeral Home at which time a Catholic Mass will be celebrated in his name at St. Patrick Church. Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of your beloved father. He brought me through some very difficult times with his caring, genuine, loving demeanor. He was my children’s pediatrician, along with his beautiful sons, until they were too old to see a pediatrician! We haven’t found a better more caring doctor and I do believe there’s no one like Dr. Grello! Bless his family with your wonderful memories and please know we loved him too. LOVE Laura, Natalie and Matthew Befumo

I remember Dr. Grello as my daughter's pediatrician. He was probably the kindest doctor I ever met. As a young overly-concerned mother, I once called his emergency number at 2 am and he was patient, calmed me down, told me what to do. I'll never forget him.

Dr. Grello was my sons’ pediatrician, and I always had complete faith in him. He was such a caring doctor, exactly what I wanted in a pediatrician. I remember how excited he got when something he was concerned about in my youngest son didn’t come to pass. He even called in his son, Dr. Fred, to share the news with him. When my oldest son was 1 1/2 years old, our family moved from Islip to Merrick, and friends kept asking me why I didn’t find a pediatrician closer to home. I never did change doctors because it was worth it to me to make the drive to see a doctor I trusted and respected. I am so sorry to hear of his passing, and I am grateful for the years he took care of my sons.

I’m very saddened to learn of Dr Fred Grello’s passing.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Grello 35 years ago when my first of three sons was born. There are quite a few good, memorable stories of how he handled their regular check-ups and how he diagnosed and handled my 3 sons health issues that popped up during those early childhood years.
Let’s just say here that he was a Truly Wonderful Doctor!
Rest in peace Doctor and our condolences to his entire family.

My heart hurts to know of the loss of Dr Grello. I can’t begin to state how he changed our lives. My husband and I wanted to adopt a baby. Dr Grello took time out of his very busy practice schedule, to sit and read the sonograms of perspective babies. He was with us every step of the way with his advice. A gentleman is an understatement. We weren’t his patients but referred to by my sister who’s baby was a patient. Our end result, with Dr Grello’s guidance, is our son who will be 27 this year. He was Dr Grello’s patient until
He retired. We wrote in Dr Grello’s book and have missed him ever since. My love and prayers to the family. I know he’s in heaven watching all of you and feeling very proud. God bless

We are heartbroken on hearing the passing of Dr.Grello. He was a gentle kind man, especially caring For all of his children, yes, I said his children, because he cared for every child as if it were his own, I think everyone would agree. All of my children were cared for by Dr.Grello, and we always knew our children were in great hands, especially as a worried parent , he would always calm us down with his soft voice, and expertise in the craft he loved and dedicated to his patients and community. We will never forget you Dr.Grello, God bless you for all you have done in caring for our children, and who are now all grown up , and now have their own children, thanks to you! It is our great loss , but heavens great gain. Rest In Peace, and embrace the kingdom of heaven. My deepest condolences to the Family, and just know how loved Dr.Grello was, and always will be.
