I'm so sorry for your Loss. Mr. Hawkey was the best teacher I ever had.
I always enjoyed his classes. I even remember occasionally laughing as I walked home from school over something he may have said in class that day.
When next I visit my Parents at St. Charles , I'll stop to say a prayer and say thanks again.

To the family of Richard J. Hawkey,
I send my condolences to your family as I am a fellow English Literature student having graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1985. The reason why I am writing to you is to thank you for a wonderful book I just purchased on Amazon "The Works of James Thurber", and let you know that it was inscribed as a gift to your beloved Richard as a gift from the English Department, Division Ave., H.S. - June '88...and to let you know that it is now left in my loving hands to cherish James Thurber and in memory of your loving Father Richard J. Hawkey for as long as I am alive...love and good blessings all around...
Best,
Janine Aiello

Mr. Hawkey was a fine man, a great educator, and a caring individual. He had a profound influence on my life. I could not be more saddened than if I read of a passing of a once close friend.
I went on to have a career in the journalism. My many hundreds of by-lines are a testament to his guidance as adviser to the LMHS Spotlight.
My deepest sympathies to his family. I am only sorry that I learned of this too late to be with you to share with others in paying respects.

Truly a great teacher. I was lucky to have him teach me twice during my years at Levittown Memorial. I wasn't always the easiest student but he the nudge he gave me in 11th grade has helped me over the years. Thanks for believing!

Mr. Hawkey was the best teacher I ever had. He set the bar high, and believed all of us could reach it. His saucy wit was unmatched, and he was an inspiration. He will truly be missed, but never forgotten.

So very sad to hear of Mr. Hawkey's passing. He is my most memorable English teacher from Division Avenue and I think of him often. I graduated in 1986 and earned an A on nearly every paper I've ever written since leaving Mr. Hawkey. I have three degrees at this point and still remember how he taught me to transition "smoothly" from one paragraph to the next. He was an inspiration.
My deepest condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Hawkey's passing. I had him for English at Levittown Memorial in 1957/58. When my son Tim went to Memorial in Jr & Sr High in 1977 I was walking down the hall to a teachers meeting and heard Donna Matthews called from behind. I turned and it was Mr. Hawkey, who recognized me from those many years before. He was a wonderful teacher and a lovely man. I ran into him a few times after that at the Wantagh Train station and enjoyed a shot conversation. My sympathies to the family.
