You can take the Dodgers out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take the Brooklyn out of the Dodger boy! Lover of all sports. Definitely a baseball player from a young age, he was scouted by the Dodgers’ Branch Rickey for their AAA Farm Team as a pitcher. As a young man in the early/mid 1950’s, Bob was involved in a period of dramatic U.S. social changes, including baseball integration. Bob’s early experiences exposed him to injustices during which he was an advocate for the equality of all.
After his military service (Army) in Panama, Bob returned to NY and eventually moved to Long Island with his family leading to his career as a physical education teacher at Coram Elementary School. Active member of St. Patrick’s parish for many years and directly involved with the creation of St. Patrick’s School gymnasium. Active member of the Daniel A. Tobin, Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Our Lady of Knock, East Islip, NY).
Throughout his life, Bob was devoted to his faith and his reverence to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his charitable/philanthropic activities. Helping friends and family was a large part of his life.
Bob loved the beach, family vacations, sporting events, parties, Ireland, and the occasional libation. Of the most importance to Bob was making all gatherings special. All moments deserve a special toast; as the Irish salute goes, “Slainte!”

It was just this year that I learned that Bob had passed. He was like a father figure to me when I was on the team. (CYO) I entered the Prep Seminary for the Montfort Missionary Fathers 1964. The hardest thing I thought I'd had to give up was playing ball for Bob. With my begging and Bob's intersession, I got a parole every week in Baseball season. I learned how to play the game and to use my brain as well as my arm. I took my experience that I learned under Bob's tutelage and had a successful baseball experience into my adult years. After the US Army Security Agency 68-70, I had my shots with Cubs and Senators and both said I should give up Coaching and play fulltime and make the commitment to playing - that coaching would get me no where. I thought about what Bob did for me and the choice was easy, I wanted to be like Bob. I never looked back and got amerce joy watching these older boys learn. Thank you Bob

BOB is a constant, a Northstar of kindness, mirth, generosity, family, and community. One my all-time favorite people, fond early memories of making whorlpools with Danny, Maryanne, my brother & sisters, and all the other kids at his pool-parties; sleep-overs, the pet collie, and Mrs. Veritch's Christmas shortbread cookies. Gratitude for the many family gatherings he hosted. In latter years, we two would occasionally get together for drinks and great tales at Artie Schiller's SouthsideHotel. I missed seeing him in the last few years, not having had the opportunity to get back home to BayShore. A man of truly successful humanity, the road did indeed "rise up to meet him."

I am sending my love and well wishes to the family of Robert Veritch. I grew up on the same street, Bardolier Lane, with the Veritch Family and they remain a loving and kind family. They were great neighbors and I played with their children. Mr. Veritch worked in our church, St. Patrick's in Bay Shore, as an usher for many years and his devotion to his faith was admirable. I will always remember him as a gentle man, a kind soul, a good neighbor and friend, as well as a loving and devoted husband and father. Mr. Veritch, may you rest in the arms of our Lord in Heavenly eternity. You were such a good man.

My neighbor, “Uncle Bob” was a great man. Our Lord will surely welcome his good and faithful servant home with open arms and a hearty “Well Done.” He was a fine patriarch who loved his family. And he put his all into teaching the “youngsters.” It was my pleasure to have known him.

I taught with Bob at Coram School for many years. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. A gentleman to his core, he was loved and respected by students and staff alike. Bob was a role model to us all. He was a complete "Class Act" and will certainly be missed deeply.
With sincere sympathy.
