As we all know Bill was a very special guy and like you I will miss him greatly. When my family moved to
Massapequa in 1955 Billy was the first person to introduce himself to me. We were friends from then on.
We shared many adventures but the best and greatest was our time at Tobay. In fact, if not for Billy I would
never have gotten a job there as he prevailed upon his dad to get me hired. What a gift!
But over the years the thing that impressed me most was all the friends he made. He had more friends than
anyone I have known. And he was at the center of a huge group of people that he kept connected and that, in itself is a great legacy. He touched so many people by keeping them in touch.
I will be forever thankful for having had Bill for a friend.
Rest well my friend.

Had to add this remembrance about Bill. Summer of 1965 Tobay Beach.
I was on 1 west stand. Billy was on the Main Stand.
There was a westerly drift and my attention was on the swimmers to my west drifting out of the protected area.
Suddenly got a whistle blast from Billy on the main pointing to a swimmer that had drifted into my zone and appeared to be about 50 yards out and struggling.
My first reaction was pissed because I didn't see the swimmers or his struggle.
So acknowledged back to Billy I was watching the swimmer.
My ego kicked in and didn't want to admit I didn't see him.
As I remember Billy stood up and was ready to go so I jumped down from the stand grabbed the torpedo and made my way out to the struggling swimmer. It seemed like a lifetime getting to him. Billy and I arrived at the same time. And will always remember what he said to me "what took you so long".

For Bill.
Two stories: Great swells from a Hurricane breaking right on the west sand bar. Sunny Tobay morning; slight winds from the NW. Bill and I grab our green Churchill fins and jump into a sea puss (rip current) to ride it out
to the wreck. We talk and talk, dive under white water and talk and talk. We stop and look east and south to get our bearings off the wreck's stern post. No wreck. We look out toward the south; still no wreck.
Simultaneously we look toward the shore and realize in our talking we passed the wreck by eighty yards. No sweat. We swim west out of the sea puss. Still talking we set up to catch the next wave.
He arrives the day before Thanksgiving. Bill parks his Mercedes between our Vermont house and barn. We are chasing Thanksgiving dinner, a goose. It flies toward Bill. Claire shouts, "Bill, catch it." Bill snags the goose mid flight. The goose flaps against his Brookes Brothers suit. He hands me the goose and then his says his indelible, "Unbelievable."
I still have those green fins. I'll remember you Bill every time I use them and jump into new currents.
Claire and I send prayers for Kathy, Meganne, Billy and Brendan.

Dear Bill and family,
Your Dad was a super individual and will be missed by all whot74fr came in contact with him. In my case it was through his lifeguarding at ToBay back in the 60's. About 15 years ago he contacted me while on his way south on I-95, passing through our home in Ormond Beach. He visited Ellie and I for a few hours and regaled us with many tales of the past.
Best regards,
Dave Glaysher

Billy or Sliver as I knew him was a true Tobay Beach Icon. Billy and his family lived and grew up just down the street from me in Massapequa, NY. His younger brother Jimmy and I were in the same grade.
Had the pleasure of corresponding with Billy about our days at Tobay and experiences in Vietnam.
Ithe was sad to hear the news of Billy's passing.
I will never forget him

From high school days at Massapequa in the late ‘50s and onward, Bill Warner’s sense of loyalty always impressed me. To schoolmates, Bill was a loyal and valued participant in MHS athletic teams and other school activities. Decades later, the MHS Hall of Fame owes a few of its members, and even more its golf game participants, to Bill. Loyalty to his father, mother and brothers was warm and true – I often enjoyed their good company and his mom’s great cooking. Tobay veterans will remember Bill’s exceptional lifeguarding skills, wry humor and lifelong friendships. His loyalty to Tobay Beach itself, through thick and thin, was unequalled. Bill’s expertise at bodysurfing was legendary; I still see the Sliver slicing a wave like a human surfboard. Comrades from the Vietnam war have recalled Bill’s loyal service then and his networking throughout the ensuing years. I’m so glad my family got to meet Bill.
Not least was Bill’s loyalty and devotion to his wife Kathy, and their children, Meganne, Billy and Brendan. My heart goes out to them as it aches for you, old pal.

Bill will be missed! He was a true friend and I always enjoyed his company. Loved listening to his stories and jokes (not so much) but that was his hallmark. He loved talking about the kids. He was a fun golf partner and I look forward to playing golf with him again in the beyond. Bill: Save me a tee time!
