My blood cousin was a Vietnam Veteran , who had faithfully served in the US Air Force, passed away from bone cancer. During a missile attach in Da Nang, he was wounded when shrapnel had hit his left hand. I grew up with my cousin in an Apartment house, located at 442 East 103rd Street in Brooklyn. My grandfather had owned half of a duplex apartment building. He rented out apartments to his children's family. We all called Glenn by the name of "Junior" to distinguish him from his father also named Glenn. He was a good cousin and most likely he saved my life when we were playing over a neighbor's house where we had a mutual friend whose last name was Moony. The house was located near the border between Canarsie and Brownsville. Brownsville was a bad neighborhood and occasionally young teens from Brownsville would show up . We would run back home when they appeared. On one occasion we were not fast enough when several teens appeared with bows and arrows. I was only 7 at the time and my cousin Glenn was 12. One of the teens proceeded to take aim in my direction; shoot the arrow and Glenn pushed my head down. Had it not been for Glenn's heroics; I would have been shot in the neck and would not be writing this memory today. Instead the arrow's point landed in the back of my head. I remember that I was bleeding profusely from my head. An ambulance was called and I was rushed to Kings County Hospital with my mother holding my hand. I owe my life to Glenn and may he rest in peace.
