Elsie Mae Taylor was born on May 21, 1932. She was the sixth child born to Anna and Walter Taylor. Although born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania she spent most of her formative years split between Baltimore, Maryland and Darlington, South Carolina. She met and married Robert Witherspoon in Brooklyn, New York where they began their lives together.
Elsie was a nurturing mother and homemaker for many years until her last child started junior high school. She attended the Jesus is Lord Fellowship church for over 27 years. As a member, she taught Sunday school, read the church bulletin for Sunday services and was the chairperson for the church beautification committee. During her last year of service she volunteered to help clean church.

To the Witherspoon children,
Your Mom was a wonderful lady who cared for her students. She was kind and compassionate. I missed seeing her since my retirement but tried to keep in touch thru Facebook. Please accept my deepest condolences.
I have many memories of the Witherspoons that I had the pleasure of teaching and/or coaching and I know your Mom had a big part in making you the adults that you have become.
Fondly, Eleanor Eckman

Elsie was one of a kind. A sweet, kind lady with a spine of steel. In my first year teaching, Elsie was helping me deal with a recalcitrant student who unbeknownst to me was making a serious threat. When the threat was repeated, Elsie took steps to ensure consequences were taken. Additionally, Elsie educated me as to what was said and why it was a threat that needed follow up. Elsie was one of those people who brought a smile to your face and gladness to you soul just by encountering her in the hall. I am richer for having known her and the world is dimmed by her passing. My sincere condolences to her family and community.

Elsie was a wonderful person and a pleasure to work with and know. I spent considerable time with her in the Time Out room mediating students. Her calming demeanor always helped the situation. Elsie always had a kind word and a smile for all who crossed her path. She will truly be missed.
With deepest sympathy,
Eric Lundgren (Dean of Students- retired)
